Saturday 17th. Yesterday’s racing saw us make a nice profit on the day, although TAVENER let us down by getting bumped and barged out of contention our other bet STREETS OF NEW YORK at 11/4 did the business for us by winning very nicely at a very well backed 7/4.
Saturday Morning, last night was our first night proper in Rabat and as I had got two tickets for Manchester United v Southampton game for Ian and the bar owner Antoine of the Nationalist Club last week, I could envisage a late one, I wasn’t disappointed and with a large gin and tonic and a large JD and coke coming to the princely sum of €4 we rocked the night away. Ian is downing the JD and cokes as if there’s no tomorrow and looking out of the bottom of my Gin glass that’s how it’s beginning to seem. I think we continued until I finally rolled into the hotel at 3-30am.
It’s always amazes me that how much more alcohol can be consumed on holiday than at home, if I had of packed that lot away at home I would be hanging like the preverbal bastard this morning, but I’m bright as a daisy and ready to work.
Although we have lots of racing today, the weather is going to play a huge part in the results and for a Saturday the racing doesn’t look great, although we have got the long awaited reappearance of SPRINTER SACRE who is trading at a ridiculously short price of even money, in my opinion he should be even money to get round certainly not to win.
LE MERCURY looks booked for a place at least today so at 11/2 I back and email him out, on the same email I add GREEN FLAG ew at 6/1 and finish our day off with another ew bet the A P ridden EASTLAKE at 12/1.
Malta is not super warm at the moment, but the 18*s is a far cry from the snow back home so I’m well happy with it.
I always make sure that I can watch the Saturdays racing wherever I am in the world and today was no exception. I wasn’t sure it was a good idea as LE MERCURY was quickly disappearing from view jumping two out and jumping the last he wasn’t even in the picture, but he somehow conjured up a late run and got up on the line to nick us an 11/2 place.
GREEN FLAG seems to be regressing after being totally outpaced and pulled up which now leaves his Grand National aspirations looking a forlorn cry.
Turning for home AP is tanking along on EASTLAKE as he cruises into second and is trading long odds on in running to win, unfortunately this is short lived as the conditions get the better of him jumping the last and he just stays on strongly enough to nick us another place at 12/1 and a small ew profit.
No trees pulled up again and we have ended up having a cup of tea day.
Sunday 18th. Something a little different today as my Father and I are heading to Marsa as it’s the opening day of the trotting racing season. Trotting is similar in principle to the roman chariot racing, but without the spears on the wheels.
The local bar owner Vince who owns a number of racers has told us that No 5 MONT CENIS HONEY a 15yo French import in the 4th race which is a Class Gold will go very close.
We have a fun bet in the first on the Favourite at 5/4 to pay our X’s, as we think and all that does is buys the Maltese greedy 1 another beer as he trails in 8th of 12. We change tact now into girly mode and as we have left good old Blighty in blizzard conditions and he is a grey we back No 3 MR SNOWMAN.
He slips and slides into fourth another to the Greedy 1s. We miss out race three as we have managed to get into the owners and trainers bar upstairs, sounds more glamorous than it is as it makes Fakenham look like Royal Ascot. Race 4 and it’s time for our big tip I have €100 on him at 6/4, my shrewd Father finds a Greedy 1with a sign saying special rates for tourists and gets 3/1. After leading all the way my Fathers 3/1 pays the same as my 6/4 (Jack shit) as we get carved up on the final bend and finishes second. Next race my Fathers pleased that 5/1 was shown on the board and he was given 8/1 then we noticed it was 65/1 on the tote, after trailing in last we knew why the tote was so outrageously priced. Two more small loses and I can’t work out why No 1 P A SURPRISE is 2/1 fav on their tote and 5/1 outside, I approach the tourist rate offering layer and asks for No 1, tourist?? yes I reply, ok 10/1 for you, when I accept and give him €40 he looks at me over his glasses in surprise and takes it. No 1 and No 5 pass me locked together and it’s a real tight finish, nobody can call it. After a long wait my P A SURPRISE gets it oi oi a winning day, on collecting my winnings he says you “English Robin Hood” how funny, my Father also wins the last and comes out levelish.
We head back to Rabat after having great fun and it’s also made better by having a winning day, I know it’s only beginners luck, but it’s still nice when it happens.
I know I will get some witty and cocky comments after this story and deservedly so as the best I could muster back home is an ew place.
We are only a winner away on both services to pop us back into profit for the month and assuming we have racing this week we will soon be in the black again. I know that I have one for tomorrow at Exeter, ground dependent, as I have just been told she is fully expected to win after her better than expected reappearance second last time out.
It’s off to the Chinese tonight which is excellent and in Sliema.
Monday 19th. I am still waiting for our little girl to come through today as I send out my first email for my ANDY BELLs clients. I make on paper the 1-40 at Wolverhampton a two horse race ARCHIPELIGO at 9/4 and URBAN CASTLE who is also trading at 9/4. I don’t advise level stakes as I get the greater stable confidence on URBAN CASTLE so I advise a bigger win bet on him. I also chance my arm with a small RFC on the pair.
PERSONA GRATA at slight odds on looks different class on all known form to the rest and looks to have got in relatively lightly off a mark of 80 as DREAM CHILD who beat him on his only defeat by a neck is running of 90. To finish my ANDY BELLs bets off today we will have to wait until the last where NITROGEN is expected to step up on his last time out second.
My “good thing” at Exeter hasn’t come through yet and after a couple of calls I assume it’s because the track is still frozen down the back straight under the trees, so we jump in our Padjero and head up the coast road towards the youngsters party area of Paceville for a few Cisk xl’s.
Just as we arrive I get my call I’ve been waiting for and told it’s all systems go at Exeter and we have to back MARIE DE ANGES who as I said let her supporters down last time with a few sloppy jumps. This shouldn’t be the case today and the connections are backing her to recoup their loses. I email her out on the LATE SERVICE as time has got away and advise taking the 5/2.
The only downside to Malta is the parking is an absolute pain in the arse and if you do happen to see a space by god you have to take your life in your hands to secure it.
ARCHIPELIGO Is smashed up in the betting into 5/4 and I wonder whether I have picked correctly as URBAN CASTLE is a drifter. ARCHIPELIGO sets a suicidal pace and can’t last home for our forecast, but no harm done as URBAN CASTLE wins nicely under a cool ride by Adam Kirby and we make a nice profit on the race as he returns at a really good sp of 11/4.
PERSONA GRATA looks all over the winner and gets mugged by a rag and ruins our double and coupled with our win bet on him turns our winning day into a losing one. It’s not helped by NITOGEN getting out paced half way and than running on strongly all be it to late.
MARIE DE ANGES wins very nicely and is most impressive as we fully expected and personally gives me a winning day and a even better winning one for my LATE SERVICE only clients.
A couple of heavy nights have passed us by so we decide to take full advantage of our half board and eat in the hotel. We decide to pop down stairs to have a look at the entertainment which is ok, there are no empty glasses in the room and on closer inspection I can see why, they are all full up with false teeth and I can give them all about twenty five years, certainly no holiday romance for me lol.
Tuesday 20th. We wake this morning on the back of a very annoying day yesterday when our whole day was ruined by the rag of the field. We had punted.
URBAN CASTLE who won at a good price of 11/4 after trading at 9/4 for most of the day and I also put him in a win double with PERSONA GRATA, who loomed up two out and traded at 1/10 on in running only to pull seven lengths clear and get caught on the line by the David Simcock 14/1 rag of the field, gutted or what, over a twenty five point profit is all of a sudden a loss.
Anyway enough of my crying over spilt milk we are too good to be kept down for long and we must calmly move on.
Today the very shrewd Richard Guest stable has booked the services of AP for their 8/1 shot MONTAFF, who looks as if he could be a plot horse, also I am told that the connections left their money behind on ROWDY ROCHER last time because of sloppy jumping and they have given him lots of schooling at home since and are attempting to recoup their loses today at 4/1. I email out my clients an ew bet on both at 8/1 and 4/1 and also an ew double.
We are heading into Rabat today where there’s loads of wifi I can use which is great as I can watch all the racing which is on RUK and ATR on my iPad. It’s not a quirk of fate that the wifi just happens to be in the two bars we most regularly frequent Vince’s and The Piazza.
I am disappointed to see that MONTAFF has been withdrawn due to the ground, watch out for him to reappear because I think I may have stopped something. The extra schooling was certainly worthwhile as ROWDY ROCHER put in a superb round and wins easily at a brilliant sp of 5/1, best odds guaranteed again guys and gals you just can’t afford to ignore this concession as I’ve said many times before.
Another nice winning day for us our ew double copped with a non runner and a 5/1 winner and also our single win on ROWDY ROCHER, so another good days work.
We are off out tonight to meet our mate Johnny who is celebrating his birthday and we are having a meal in his fabulous winter restaurant, which is great as I can’t stick another night in the ball room, which I have now renamed the hospital ward.
Wednesday 21st. We made just over 8 points profit yesterday and hopefully we can now continue in the same vein today.
Steve is all over the ex pointer who is making his hurdling debut today WESTEND STAR who cost his connections the princely sum of £125,000 is trading at a very short price of 5/4.
With WESTEND STAR emailed out I add another ex pointer in the previous race as well MAGAMIKE who is trading at 11/2, this time as an ew bet.
As we have nothing planned today we are going bar hopping. Our first port of call is The Piazza where there are always loads of pretty Maltese girls behind the ramp and they are always very friendly and willing, to serve of course what else?? After three or four we head across the square to Vince’s which is rather more localised.
At race time WESTEND STAR has amazingly drifted right out to 9/4 and some how the market has decided that GRANDE ANTARCTICA should be the 5/4 favourite, this is ridiculous as he will never stay. As I’ve said before there is great value to be had with these Hunter Chasers and ex pointers as the Greedy 1’s have no idea how to price them up and we have certainly found a niche market and with Steve’s expertise we can make lots of money again this year.
After saying all this you can’t legislate for an awful jump which is what WESTEND STAR produced and gave poor Jason Maguire no chance as he was dumped on his butt. MEGAMIKE did us no favours either as he finished a distant third with the race only paying two places.
So after a nice winning day yesterday we have begrudgingly handed some back today.
Thursday 22nd. Bit disappointed we couldn’t kick on again yesterday but I have two shorties today and I have been told they will both win. I email out a maximum win double on RATHLIN ROSE in the first at Fakenham at 10/11, I am told that he will be kicked out and lead all the way and our second leg is the Dave Maxwell owned and ridden OUT NOW at Warwick in the Hunter Chaser and this is streets ahead of it’s opposition and is also trading at 10/11.
As usual the Greedy 1’s haven’t a clue how to price these Hunter chasers up as this should be at least a 1/3 ON shot. The Hunter Chaser season really kicks into gear next week and I am hoping we have a marvellous year again just like last. Anybody who’s not a member of my ANDY BELLs service should join NOW or if you are certainly don’t resign as we cleared up last year with winners at 25/1, 14/1, 12/1, 10/1 and many many more.
We are packing as we are flying home tonight, just in time for me to attend Huntingdon races tomorrow, Peterborough Dogs with the Colonel Friday night and then a quick train journey to Doncaster Saturday morning for their days racing.
RATHLIN ROSE does exactly what we were told he would do and lead all the way for a never in danger easy win at a well backed 8/11, a great start and the first leg of our maximum double is landed at 10/11. All we need now is Dave to sit tight on his OUT NOW as he is the proverbial good thing and we have landed a very nice 20ish point profit double.
I get a call advising me to back THE JOB IS RIGHT across the water at Gowan Park. I email him out on my LATE SERVICE and advise taking the 12/1 ew which Ladbrokes are offering.
We didn’t even get a giggle with, what can I say Dave’s over animated riding action always looking where he’s been as he never had to move a muscle and won by twenty five totally uncontested lengths to complete our double and wow what an amazing sp of 5/4 what a joke once again the layers have no idea.
How unlucky were the LATE SERVICE with THE JOB IS RIGHT at 12/1 ew as we were defiantly booked for second at the very least when he fell at the very last fence, wicked rotten luck strikes us again.
I can get on the dreaded smartie pot tonight knowing that I have turned in another nice profit today for all my ANDY BELLs clients and very nearly one for the LATE SERVICE as well.
Friday 23rd. I got home at 2am this morning and I have to leave for Huntingdon, weather permitting at 11am, so not much time. It was nice to land our double yesterday and how easy did both of them win and in the process we made a very nice 14 points profit on the day. If Captain Baileys POPPY BOND hadn’t of just been ran out of things near the line at 3/1 we could of added another twelve points to that total.
We have now had three winning days this week, I did say all along we would turn it round although the jobs not complete yet, we are now coming to the boil nicely.
We are playing with the Greedy 1s money on STEEL SUMMIT and the way he won last time suggests he’s not ready to lose yet. BUCKWHEAT was very impressive last time and put in a near faultless round of jumping until blundering at the last, but he still won very easily by ten lengths, he has obviously got to beat his main danger DAYS OF HEAVEN who is difficult to gauge properly as he seems to have loads of ability but big issues. I have emailed both these out as wins bets and also a win double. Also I have added a small ew bet on THREE FACES WEST who is a bet to nothing ew at 11/2.
Well that’s it for this week another chapter in my life is done and dusted, be good everybody and NEVER, NEVER, never crumble under the pressure.
Back next Saturday.
