A Depressing Week.
Saturday 24th. Yesterday we backed two short priced favourites BUCKWHEAT and STEEL SUMMIT, who had both won most impressively last time, well STEEL SUMMIT had won his last four very impressively and we had been fortunate enough to have been on him twice. Finally we backed against the short priced Nicky Henderson favourite with THREE FACES WEST ew at 11/2.
I am having a Saturday at home today, no antics no away days just in front of the TV. Just before racing starts I email out the Richard Fahey trained LA DOROHEA to the LATE SERVICE clients.
BUCKWHEAT gets a bazaar ride to my eyes as his wins have come from hold up rides and today he was pushed out in front and let the not straight forward DAYS OF HEAVEN have something to shoot at and beat him going away. STEEL SUMMIT will now have a well earned rest as he couldn’t win off today’s weight and he goes up another 14lbs tomorrow after getting well beaten today.
Thank goodness that Jason Maguire was bang on his metal today and took the race to the Nicky Henderson short priced favourite by leading all the way on the ultra game THREE FACES WEST and landing us a right nice and needed 11/2 winner.
Unfortunately for us we bag another second when LA DOROHEA bumps into the winless SHASAG on a good day, who wins for Roger Varion at an unfancied 8-1.
Saturday morning. A small winning day yesterday thanks to Jason Maguires good front ride and the resolution of THREE FACES WEST.
PEACE AND CO is a ridiculously short price and the Paul Nicholls stable has been very excited with the work at home of IBIS DU RHEU. I suggest an ew bet on IBIS DU RHEU at 8/1 and a reverse forecast with PEACE AND CO.
It’s lunchtime and I have two to email out on the LATE SERVICE, BLAKLION at 11/8 who is now back up in trip to his winning distance of 3 miles and also an ew bet on GRANDADS HORSE at 10/1.
I have a busy week away ahead of me approaching, Southwell on Tuesday and than the short trip after racing to stay in a Leicester Tuesday night ready for Wednesdays racing and than back to Southwell Thursday and if we escape the weather Catterick on Friday.
As for today I’m going into town to watch the racing and relax over a couple of beers.
Our bet IBIS DU RHEU is very poor and I know there will be a lot of disappointed people in the Nicholls stable, although PEACE AND CO did land the odds and won, to me that was not a performance that suggests a Cheltenham winner waiting to happen.
GRANDADS HORSE didn’t put in one of his better performances today, but his run was over shadowed by a great ride again from the champ AP aboard IF IN DOUBT, who never jumped a twig and somehow AP stuck at his task and won, how good will IF IN DOUBT be once his jumping is sorted I wonder.
With the results against us it’s not time for a session and I head home.
Sunday 25th. Another disappointing day yesterday, but we have to move on and remember the good times, which will soon return. Sometimes it’s easy to be over critical after the event, but we need to stay positive as in any sport the knockers and barrackers are no help to anybody, ask the top footballers.
The last thing I need or want to do after a poor couple of days is to be told that we need to take the great Ruby on at Gowan Park. As I’ve said we must stay positive and believers so I go with it and back BISHOPS ROAD at 9/4 and also email him out to my clients.
With this cold weather no Sunday lunches out today I am going to stay firmly in and hopefully watch “The Fly” win again and break ISTABRAQS record.
This morning prayers were answered as we got a nice winner as BISHOPS ROAD just prevails and HEATHFIELD even got a crack on the nose for getting to close in the process, although I don’t think it effected the result.
What a fabulous horse HURRICANE FLY is as he wins very well and does his Cheltenham chances no harm in the process, although I think Ruby will desert him in the big one.
Monday 26th. Not a huge winning day for us yesterday but this month I will gratefully take anything.
I am working on the Cheltenham anti-post cards for most of today and start building our portfolio. I will start putting them out at the start of February, just want to get this awful month out of the way at the moment.
Once again I make a mess of my ANDY BELLs clients selections and the only good thing about today was the ride Andrew Thornton gave BRUNETTES ONLY and netting my LATE SERVICE a very nice 10/3 winner and a very nice profit in the process.
Tuesday 27th. I am looking forward to getting amongst the action again today at Southwell and maybe it will prompt a change in luck as well.
Southwell is about 2-3 hours from me traffic dependent, so I need to be leaving at 10ish.
Unfortunately we can’t trouble the scorers today and both my services have another losing day.
I am on the verge of walking out of Southwell 5 minutes before the last race when I bump into my Roger who is a Southwell regular, he tells me that RISK N REWARD is thought to have loads in hand on his comeback run and first for David O’Mera and will win today and also Thursday. I wander back to the rails and have £200 at 7/4. As RISK N REWARD coasts past the post 3 clear I am left wishing I had got this information earlier so I could of given my LATE clients the nod and a winner, but the way he won suggests the information is spot on and I will be backing him here Thursday and also advising my ANDY BELL network of punters to do likewise.
Although personally I have backed the last winner I’m not over the moon as all my client have had another losing one.
I now have about an hours drive to Leicester and I can hopefully find a hotel in the town centre.
The three main hotels are all fully booked, so I rock up at the Camponile which is just off the town centre and as it’s my first stay here I am pleasantly pleased, that it’s nice and clean and fresh looking. A quick wash and change and a wander into the town to see whats on offer.
My first drink is in The Parcel wine bar which is right beside the train station, after drinking two bottles of Pilsner beer and than noticing their past there best before date, I just hope there’s plenty of loo roll in the hotels Thomas and this is before a possible trip to the Indian.
Wednesday 28th. Copious amounts of loo roll were fortunately not required last night so my tin guts beat the best before date. I popped into the Weatherspoons on my way to eat and now know what we look and sound like on our days out as five lads were absolutely steaming and there was plenty of room all around them. On leaving I spy a nice looking Indian Restaurant across the road, so I pop in and wander down the stairs to a totally empty restaurant, met by two very enthusiastic waiters, experience very quickly comes to the fore and I pretend to look around for my make believe mates who I should be meeting, so I say oh they haven’t arrived yet let me see if they are still across the road at Weatherspoons, see you later, thank you. Lol I am watched all the way across the road and I have to have another beer in Weatherspoons for fear of a chilly powder bombing.
I find a very nice Italian Restaurant where the food is top notch.
At the best of times Leicesters hill is a killer and after the storms we have had this morning its going to be an absolute nightmare to get.
Out of my three selections today once again, the best I could muster was one winner and amazingly I had to beat AP on a favourite to do that, but lets not crap FASCINO RUSTICOs performance just because I’m totally out of sorts as he won very nicely and limited our days loses.
It’s straight back to the hotel tonight and I’m not in any mood to even go out.
Thursday 29th. Another day another dollar at least I know we are going to back RISK N REWARD today at Southwell and I email him out nice and early so we can snap up the early prices as he will be well backed today.
By god when the wheels are back on my wagon the Greedy 1s had better be on their toes because I have been having a torrid run at the moment, I don’t know what I have done to upset the betting gods, but I wish they would tell me so I could rectify it and quickly as this slow death is not to be recommended. My only solace is I know these sort of runs happen to everybody at some point and I know I can’t live off my 550 points profit last year forever and IT WILL change, nobody knows when, but we KNOW it will and once again my Facebook page will be full of praise, lol lol, as if, when I’m doing well it’s like somebody’s died at least I do get to speak to a very few disgruntled ones, with very short memories when things are poor.
Hopefully our trusty Hunter Chasers can pop in a winning day for us as we are backing DOUBLE DASH and forecasting him with the up and coming pretender SOBRE TRESOR.
We have also backed EARTHMOVER who has a 12lb pull on the favourite as he has his favoured soft ground again where he is 2/2 on and not the heavy where he was very disappointing on last time.
It’s not a long journey from Leicester to Southwell just under an hour.
On arrival I am met in the car park and asked if I would be interested in backing a horse at Southwell for the connections next week, of course I am and I’m told it’s been working with a previous winner so fully expected to oblige.
As soon as Smiley moves his hands I can see the divets that are being kicked up are not of the soft ground type and sure enough the heavy ground defeats us and EARTHMOVER as Smiley quietly pulls him up. As RISK N REWARD passes me and the post two clear it was well worth my journey up here as we have not only had a winner we have a live one to bet next week.
We are now depending on our Hunter Chasers to determine whether end the day with a profit or not. On the final circuit I am quietly confident as SOBRE TRESOR is giving us a perfect lead into the race and young Edwards has DOUBLE DASH lobbing along on the rail in third with the old boy COOMBE HILL splitting our two. When COOMBE HILL misses two out and we are sitting first and second I can be forgiven for thinking about time we copped one. COOMBE HILL pings the last and the joyous Mr Gethings has out ridden us and spoils our day, the best horse hasn’t won and we have finished second and third, just typical at the moment.
It’s going to be another long journey home tonight with plenty of time to reflect, at least the LATE SERVICE had a winner with the all the way leader LUV U WHATEVER at 15/8.
Friday 30th. Let down by our trusty Hunter Chaser information for once and as I said to one of my punters today if Saturdays and Sundays let us down I shall be heading towards beachy head Monday morning. Seriously we had a great time on the Hunter circuit last year and I have no reason to doubt we will do the same this year, starting this weekend.
We are nearing the end of January and to be honest I’m not sorry as I have not had a good time. It’s the start of a long year though and if I can match my profits of last year I will be very happy.
Today I like the look of WATERLOO DOCK who won last time after a time in the doldrums and might of just liked getting his head in front again, I advise backing him win only and taking the 3/1. I am told that the old grey PENSAX LAD will bang out of the stalls tonight and attempt to lead all the way, as I’m not in top form or full of confidence I back and advise an ew bet at 4/1 and also an ew double at 3/1 and 4/1.
Early afternoon I get a call saying that AUTOMOTIVE has arrived safely at Lingfield and will go very close and also barring accidents now MONSIEUR CHEVALIER is back on the tapia he can also be backed to win with confidence, so I email both these out on the LATE SERVICE.
No away days racing or frequenting Weatherspoons today as good old Betfan towers have moved the goalposts on me and my weeks exploits and this Diary now needs to be in Friday night to give extra time in the cutting room lol, at least it saves me the hassle of finding a free Saturday tip. It’s ok this time of year as I can cope with no Weatherspoons on a Friday or standing in the chilling winds or snow, it’s when I am away all week during my very busy summer months and making up for all these crappy tips I’m serving you up at the moment, that’s when we may get a few Betfan stewards inquiries.
WATERLOO DOCK doesn’t complete the double but does at least place to keep our ew double with PENSAX LAD, who runs tonight at Wolverhampton alive. Just before this weeks Diary goes to press I watch agonizingly as AUTOMOTIVE sprints clear and trades at 1/20 on in running only to get caught bang on the line by a rag, so we need MONSIEUR CHEVALIER on the LATE SERVICE to oblige later.
So we now need PENSAX LAD at 4/1 to win to give my ANDY BELLS service a good winning day and also the same applies to MONSIEUR CHEVALIER at 13/8 to also give the LATE SERVICE a winning day.
Good luck both you boys I and we need you.
I have another few days away racing next week, weather permitting. I plan to visit Wolverhampton to back my friends horse on Monday, back to Southwell Tuesday, than on to York Wednesday to meet Steve the author of my book “My Betfan Year” to push this into a couple of new circles and meet the people behind the scenes which will hopefully open up another few avenues in promoting it and than finally onto Huntingdon which is on the way home Thursday.
Let’s hope getting back onto the courses can hopefully see me turn things round for us and quickly.
Please NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, never give up as we will turn it round and very soon, hopefully our two runners tonight are the start.
Be good and never get caught.
Back next Saturday.
