While all of racing in Ireland focuses on the first day of Champions Weekend at Leopardstown Haydock stages its only Group 1 race of the season. The Sprint Cup is run over the straight six furlongs at the track. Brando could be the best treated horse in the race and can prevail.
Harry Angel, the winner of the July Cup at Newmarket, has drifted in the betting this week. The horse for money has been Brando and if that move continues today the horses could be at similar odds come race time. The form suggests Brando can win the race and the ground has gone against Harry Angel.
The horse beat Brando by almost two lengths in the July Cup. That race was run on good to firm ground and the going is soft at Haydock today which favours Brando. The second favourite also has a four pound weight pull from the Newmarket race so in theory is well in at the weights.
Tasleet has something to find on form and ratings and was well beaten in the July Cup. The Tin Man was also down the field in that race but won the Group 1 Diamond Stakes over six furlongs at Royal Ascot. Blue Point is closely matched with Harry Angel and can make the frame today.
However, Brando showed improved form to win a Group 1 race in France last month and has conditions to suit so can win Haydock’s biggest Flat race of the season.
