It was nice to get the Max bet home at Newbury on Monday (Clean Sheet) given a power packed ride by the champ to get it up on the line after trading at 50/1 in-running on Betfair. Windsor Park winning at Leopardstown gave us the double on the day, Dermot Weld’s 5yo looks very professional and clearly has an engine.
A press conference was held last Monday at the Shangri-La Hotel, situated on the 34th floor of London’s iconic Shard, announcing a new 10-year partnership between Goodwood Racecourse and Qatar.
The partnership is the single biggest sponsorship deal ever done for the benefit of British racing.
Commencing in 2015, this makes the Qatar Goodwood Festival one of the most significant and valuable meetings in the world.
Lord March said: “Today’s announcement is absolutely fantastic news both for Goodwood and for racing in the UK.”
“We thought for a long time that it was important to get prize money up in order to have a world-class festival at Goodwood which is on the global stage. It was a number of years ago that we started to put the plan together. We thought how we could make the whole week into something truly tremendous.”
“We have talked a lot with Hamad (Al Attiyah, President of the Qatar Equestrian Federation) about supporting racing at all levels at Goodwood. We are very keen for that to continue and to have a race like the Stewards’ Cup worth £250,000 is absolutely tremendous.”
“The Goodwood brand is very important. The whole look and feel of Goodwood is absolutely vital. The Qataris very much have a passion for horses, so that is something we both share. We both want to do everything very well and together I think we can produce racing at a very high level.”
Silviniaco Conti repeated last year’s heroics and landed the Boxing Day thriller the King George for Paul Nicholls and Noel Fehily at Kempton. Stellar Ransom (7/2) and Alternatir (5/2) made it a great Boxing Day for us and if Meetmeatthemoon had not been beaten by a cigarette paper on the jam stick we would have had the treble’ never mind things are just starting to go our way hope it will continue into the New Year.
Emperor’s Choice was a brave winner of the Coral Welsh Grand National at Chepstow on Saturday for Venetia Williams given a power packed ride by the ever green Aidan Coleman at 11/1 from the ultra game Benvolio.
Road To Riches continued his progression and was cut to 8/1 for Cheltenham Gold Cup after his gutsy win from On His Own in the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown on Sunday, the big disappointment of the race was the poor run of Bobs Worth who had been backed in the morning from 4/1 to 5/2, Geraghty said ”The ground was to soft for him today.”
The Henderson trained Gold Cup hero is now out to 20/1 from 10/1 for Cheltenham to regain his crown.
Sandra Hughes’s talented Lieutenant Colonel wins his second Grade 1 win at Leopardstown and is now as low as 14/1 for the World Hurdle at the festival come March.
Happy New Year to all my troops lets hope 2015 is a another fantastic year with the number one advisory service Betfan.
Back next Thursday.
Yours in sport
Kevan Minter – The Colonel
