There is Group 1 action at Newmarket on Saturday and there are persuasive arguments to back the exultant combination of John Gosden and Frankie Dettori to win the race. A horse called PERSUASIVE is the ante post favourite to win the Sun Chariot Stakes for the trainer/rider team that won the Arc with Enable last Sunday.
The horse’s winning distance in the biggest Flat race in Europe was two and a half lengths but she was value for much more. Gosden would love to train Enable next season but the filly may be retired and not appear on the track aged four. However, the owners ran Frankel over the extra season so Enable could be targeted at another Arc. The gender weight allowance would make Gosden’s animal tough to beat.
Enable has amassed almost £4 million in prize money but the riches come from stud duties. However, Khalid Abdullah is not short of a bob or two or oil mine. He has a history of letting his superstars race on and a horse can truly become a great by winning huge races beyond the age of three. It would be a great boost for the sport if Enable appeared at a race track near you next season.
Dettori is now the winning most jockey in the Arc with five wins. The nightmare scenario of a recreational drugs ban and appearing on Celebrity Big brother are now in the distant past. At 46 the world’s most famous jockey could carry on for years and ride well into his sixth decade. Persuasive can keep the pot boiling by giving him another success at the highest level.
The Sun Chariot Stakes is run over the Rowley Mile…over one mile, and is part of the British Champions Series. The race is open to fillies and mares aged three and over and the younger generation receive three pounds from the older horses. It is one of the most prestigious mile Group races for which colts do not qualify so in theory Enable could run in the race!
The race could be another showdown between Dettori and Ryan Moore who rides Roly Poly for Aidan O’Brien. The jockeys are like chalk and cheese in their approach to the media and the outside world. It maybe shyness that makes Moore appear rather aloof but he is now seen by some as the best jockey in the world but Dettori also has some substance with the style. I don’t Moore think would ever do a flying dismount.
Roly Poly gets the age allowance of Persuasive and that three pounds could be crucial in the final reckoning. On ratings the horses are closely matched so a small weight advantage could decide the outcome in the final furlong. However, on form from the Group 1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown last month Persuasive has an edge and can defy the handicap. She was beaten by less than a length by Winter carrying five pounds more than that horse.
Persuasive is a four-year-old filly under Gosden’s care. As much as he appreciates her efforts the trainer will be dreaming of being involved with another four-year-old filly next season. He must hope the horse’s owner can enable him to realise that dream.
