Simon Holden Racing Club

It’s Hennessy day and sad to say the great sponsor is pulling out after this year, one of Racings most iconic Chases will soon be the 32com bright 365 fred….. which is very sad.

So todays winner will be the last one to carry the great name to victory! We can all raise a glass on a cold afternoon to that.

So to the race itself and the old adage used to be look for a progressive second season chaser with a low weight, well that was until a horse called Denman came on the scene and beat up the field twice off top weight and we realised that class in the end did tell. Well today Smad Place bids to do a Denman and win it for a second time off a welter weight of 11 stone 12. It’s hard to forget how impressive this horse was when routing them last year and he surely will run a mighty race to defend his crown. I find it hard to fathom how he is 10/1 and the horse he trounced last year Saphir De Reau is 9/1. This must be the most overhyped horse in training and yet again this week the usual suspects have all turned out tipping this horse. I can’t see it as I don’t think he gets the trip for a start. I’m also against the fave Native River certainly at the prices though he has to be feared and the Tizzards certainly seem to know a thing or two about Training Chasers.

Blacklion has come in for heavy support in the last few days and though he got beat in the Charlie Hall he apparently looked as though he badly needed the race and it’s clear that today was the plan! He is a real street fighter and will relish this long straight and is a Major Player.

However he isn’t the selection which has to be a horse from a smaller yard who has been brought along slowly and could well be a Grand National winner of the future.

This race has been a great trial for the great race over the years and Henri Parry Morgan has all the attributes needed to win this on his way to a crack at Aintree. Peter Bowen has brought him under the radar although the word is certainly out now and he has been backed I think at 11/1 with Stan James this morning and is still massive value.

Genuine Good to soft ground is perfect and he is very well handicapped. Sean Bowen takes the ride and together with his Dad they could be about to have their biggest success.

We have had a huge week on the Racing Club with Max bets Like Vinegar Hill at 5/1 and Copper Birch at 4/1 hitting them where it hurts. We are betting big this afternoon at Newcastle and Newbury so join us there is still time to be involved
