I’m happy to say that my Simon Holden Racing Club was BetFan’s top service in 2016 and I’m aiming to hold on to that crown which won’t be easy as BetFan have many very good tipsters! But they’ve got me to get past.
The week between Xmas and New Year is a time for contemplation, preparation and of course fine food and drink. It’s been quite a year in Racing with on the Flat Aiden O’Brian having his greatest ever season which is saying something given his amazing career. Yet again in 2017 it will be all about beating him if you want to win classics. Godolphin have been a distant second for years and must up their game it’s not as if they are short of a few quid.
Over the jumps Mullins obliterated all opposition but seems this year to be obsessed in annoying punters by pulling his horses out at the last minute. It’s claimed various superstars like Annie Power are not flying at home but they always seem to be fine by March. I love the Cheltenham Festival as much as anyone but if we only see our best horses once a year then this game has no future at all.
Thistlecrack looks the meanest customer we’ve seen since Denman at his peak and like Denman is built like an equine Bodybuilder. He swatted everything away at Kempton on Boxing Day and is now very short for The Gold Cup. One word of caution is his mighty jumping which was fine at Kempton but could get him into all sorts of bother at the downhill fences at Cheltenham. Just returning to team Mullins we keep hearing Douvan is the best ever at any trip. If that’s the case then instead of running against inferior opposition lets see him in the Gold Cup against Thistlecrack, come on Willie you know you want to!
So Cheltenham on New Years Day and the first day of the brave New World of ITV coverage. Good luck to them it should be fascinating. Lets start 2017 off with a big priced winner in the shape of Lamb or Cod who goes in the 12.50 and is 10/1 generally. This is a really exciting improving young horse and if he wins here will surely come back for a big race in March. But the Festival will take care of itself lets bang a win in today.
Have a great 2017 I hope you can join my Racing Club and share it with me.
Back next Saturday.
