Today’s Sports Betting Preview – By Rick Elliott

Rochdale Are On Their Way To Wembley

A money buying investor may think 10% is a good rate of return over two hours but the man on the street is unlikely to want to risk a £100 to win a tenner. Odds are what they are which is a reflection of probability with an adjustment for the bookmakers margin. The trick for the odds compilers is to make them attractive and make money for the bookmaker bosses. It’s a fine balancing act that they sometimes get wrong.

In 100 events the 1/10 favourite will not win about one in ten times but one of those shocks won’t be Tottenham at home to Rochdale in the fifth round replay of the FA Cup. The winners are away to Swansea in the quarter-finals and after that tie the last four and final matches are played at Wembley where tonight’s replay is taking place. Rochdale are 1000/1 with bet365 to win the FA Cup.

Tottenham are fourth in the Premier League while Rochdale are bottom of League 1. One of the teams involved in tonight’s tie could be playing in the Champions League again next season and their opponents could have dropped to the fourth tier. Rochdale defied the gap in class by drawing at home in the first match.

On paper this is a mis-match but tonight’s fixture will be played on grass. Rochdale have lost eight of their last 13 fixtures on the road and avoiding defeat looks beyond them tonight. However, they can prevent a drubbing so could leave the national stadium with a face-saving narrow defeat.  The bet of the night is ROCHDALE +3 goals at 5/6 with Betfair because the big outsiders can limit the damage.

In the olden days they only ever staged horse racing on grass. When meetings were abandoned betting office customers could only bet on the dogs. The three jumps meetings on turf have not survived the freeze so it’s just All-Weather racing at Newcastle and Wolverhampton today. However, there is a decent betting opportunity at Wolves (3.20pm). KING KEVIN has a very solid profile and should be backed at 10/11 with Ladbrokes.
