There is a theme this Flat season of fillies beating male horses in some of the major races and Winter could take her chance in the Irish Champions Stakes against the colts and geldings in the race at Leopardstown on Saturday. The horse is the favourite in the betting for the Matron Stakes on the same card but connections may be brave and let Winter take her chance in the Champion Stakes.
Winter is trained by Aiden O’Brien for Coolmore who understand the business of racing and breeding like no other group. The horse could take the easier option of racing against her own sex in the Matron over one mile or race against the boys over two furlongs more in the Champion Stakes (8/1 with bet365). The allowances she would receive in that race could be the key factor in the decision making process.
Winter was nothing special as a two-year-old but developed physically before embarking on her Classic season. The horse completed the English-Irish Guineas double and has since won Group 1 races at Royal Ascot and Goodwood. Enable is taking advantage of the sex and weight allowances in the major races and Winter can do the same if she is targeted at the Champion Stakes.
The race is the highlight of Irish Champions Weekend which comprises two days of high class racing at Leopardstwon and the Curragh. You can get all the best bets with our Irish Champions Weekend Special: CLICK HERE!
