The Breeders Cup is back again and in 2012 we go to the beautiful Californian track of Santa Anita which seems to be a favourite as it has hosted the race in the past. The Breeders Cup Classic is the feature race where a massive $5 million prize fund is on offer and the total money for the 2 days is $25 million, so you can see why it attracts some of the best horse’s in the world to come and try there luck and gain the prestige that goes with a win. The Americans love this time of year and will welcome owners and trainers from all parts of the globe and they love to see the British, Irish and French come and do battle with their superstars.
Over the years there have been some great US stars who have emerged such as Alysheba, Azeri, Raven’s Pass, Curlin and the lengendary Cigar who is probably their best ever. Of the Europeans, who can forget the game filly Ouija Board who won her 2nd title in 3 years in the Filly and Mares race back in 2006.
Each year the Breeders Cup gets bigger and better, and is now run over 2 days with a total of 14 races, 15 including the Marathon. On day 1 there are 5 races for the Females and on day 2 there’s 9 races for the Males, with the last 2 races worth a staggering $8 million in prize money alone. This is phenominal and life changing for the owner and trainers alike as these sums of money will give trainers the security for the future.
On the betting front there will be millions of dollars that will change hands over the 2 days and all bookmakers will be pricing the horses up accordingly as they will no doubt want to add considerable amounts to their coffers in this rich bonanza of frenzied betting. If your looking to have a bet on the European runners, then look towards the turf races that are run over 1m+, as the Americans are not as experienced over these distances on turf. But, watchout for the Yanks running on the dirt as this is there speciality and where they are always hard to beat.
If you are having a bet then it’s worth checking out the American sportsbooks as you will probably get bigger prices for the European runners than you would if betting back in Britain. However, it could work the other way as our bookmakers will probably have the Americans at bigger odds than the ones on the sportsbooks so shop around to try and get the best value for your money. Whatever happens it promises to be a great couple of days racing that no discerning race fan should miss. With all these huge events, Americans can always be relied upon to put on a spectacular showpiece.
