I wanted to mention Pricewise in today’s column. I shared a pint with an old colleague over the weekend (I’m sure a lot of you know that I used to work at head office for one of the biggest chains on the high street) and we got talking about the “legend” that is Pricewise and shared a few facts and figures about the man himself.
Better known of course as Tom Segal. Here’s a nugget of information for you. The bookies tell Pricewise what races to tip in……Stop press…..Yes you read that right, the bookies e-mail Tom Segal the day before a Saturday and they agree what races he will tip in. Why? Because he’s so good at spotting value. A man after my own heart!
Have you noticed how Pricewise doesn’t tip anything in a class 6 with 5 runners at Wolverhampton!?! Bookies know all the tricks of the trade in that one but by getting Pricewise to tip in the most difficult of races, a 20 runner handicap over 5 furlongs in a high profile race is an absolute nightmare for bookies.
A high profile tipster like Pricewise who is very good at what he does can funnel money into a certain part of the market thus shortening up the price into its correct value. There are plenty of people who like to oppose the man so they will bet on other selections and before you know it the bookie has a nicely balanced book.
If you understand the bookies margins have a look at the margins in what races he tips in, they are massive. Although it is hard to find a proofing website that logs all of Pricewise’s tips at SP you would not make a profit. He’s good but the bookies are better 😉
That’s it for this week. The moral of the story is that you are much better off finding a good reliable tipster that hasn’t got quarter of a million readers following their tips and of course collapsing the market.
