Well last Thursday I had the most amazing evening at the Hove cricket ground where John Francome was the guest speaker at a charity dinner. John is very down to earth and one of the most genuine guys you could ever wish to meet.
His views gave us a big insight into how brave these jump jockeys have to be in their chosen profession compared to prima donna footballers who writhe in agony at the slightest touch.
When asked if he missed riding he said no as he never wanted to be a jockey in the first place unlike Ruby and A.P. who never ever wanted to do anything else.
He said the jury is still out on the new channel 4 racing team and can’t understand why they dont use Alistair Down more often.
His humour was brilliant and there is one Lester Piggot story I will share with you. After Lester was released from prison he still had to pay the Revenue 15K and he turned up at their office with a big cardboard box telling them the money was contained in it.
The Income tax officer counted out the money to find it had over 120 thousand in it. He came out and told him it was 120 thousand to which Lester replied blow me I have given you the wrong box.
I did manage to have a quiet word with John and as some of you will know he is the landlord of the stables where Clive Cox trains. He has given me a list of some likely winners from the yard which will be given to members of Bankers Bonus and Fold4gold when they run.
Today’s racing sees the start of the Classic trials at Newmarket and they should be informative but for Howies Hottie I’m playing over the sticks at Cheltenham in the 3.20.
This is a very competitive handicap hurdle with the selection being The Romford Pele from the Rebecca Curtis yard in Wales.
7lb claimer Patrick Corbett takes the ride and off a feather weight this talented lad has every chance of being on the premises at a decent price.
The Romford Pele was actually named by A.P.after ex Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour. Although an excellent footballer Ray was not the fastest so lets hope his namesake is more like Theo Walcott.
My Name Is Rio trainer M.Dodds – Hampered when making his challenge inside the final furlong. The trainer has said he will step him up to 6 furlongs and he should soon be winning again.
Secret Look trainer E.McMahon – Last weeks hottie ran in the same race as the above but was hopelessly left at the start before finishing like a train. The ability is intact and he should find compensation before long.
Poetic Lord trainer S.Kirk – Another who could not recover from a slow start but still managed to make the frame.
O Gorman trainer G.Brown – Been running over the minimum but needs 6 furlongs to be seen at his best.
Redoute Star trainer P.Darcy – This horse has been brought over from Hong Kong and was tried last time over 14 furlongs a drop in trip is required to see him in the winners enclosure especially on the polytrack.
Back next Wednesday be lucky and have a great week.
