It’s Hennessy Gold Cup Day one of the great races in the Calendar and The Don feels this is the trickiest most competitive renewal of this great race he has ever seen. So then shall we try and find an easier race for the Saturday Special, what do you think!
Good lets crack this little code and solve the puzzle.
This is a handicap of course but one in recent years that unlike most handicaps we shouldn’t worry too much about horses carrying lots of weight. In the last ten years plenty have won with more than eleven stone and the mighty Denman knocked them out of the way like a bunch of selling platers off top weight. There’s no Denman here, though the Don was pleased to hear the mighty Tank was recovering after a life threatening illness but there are some class acts lurking near the top of the weights.
Cape Tribulation carries top weight and if we forgive him his first time out flop at Wetherby he has some classy form to his name. Even that best form makes me think this is slightly beyond him though. We also have Katenko the Venetia trained French Import up there but he looks a doubtful stayer to me though many at the yard disagree and expect a huge run.
We also have last years RSA winner Lord Windemere over from Ireland and fancied to go off clear fave. Clearly second season chasers have excelled in this over the years but I was at Cheltenham and thought it was a poor renewal. I’m not sure he is good enough and the same applies to Highland Lodge from the Lavelle yard, this one looks a dour stayer and more of a National type to the Don.
The horse I’m backing and think you should has to contend with a 651 day lay off but before you think the Don has been at the Hennessy himself and isn’t thinking straight let me assure you the horse is very fit and ready to go. He is Invictus and is the apple of his Trainer Alan King’s eye. He has done plenty of work and lets not forget the last time we saw him he put a certain Bobs Worth firmly in his place at Ascot. Now Bobs Worth no doubt has improved since but the form is still eye popping in the context of this race off a very nice weight.
King really feels this horse could go to the top and though he has had a huge lay off is still a young horse. Take the 10/1 with Bet365 who are not only best price but are paying 5 places. Who says Bookies are mean and tight eh? Oh yes everybody does.
Lets see Invictus pull off a famous victory and as always Trust in the Don.
