Last week has to be filed under the so nearly column as Robert Rock our 125/1 shot finished 6th just one place outside the top 5 which would have ensured a big each way pay out. We had three selections in Dubai and they all finished inside the top 15.
Both Dubai and the Tournament in America turned into putting contests as with no wind at either venue the courses had no defence against the players.
Putting contests like this are not everyones cup of tea but it was unquestionably exciting to watch the return to greatness of Phil Mickelson who played four perfect rounds of golf.
It will be interesting to see if the great man can hold this form together, if he can look out everyone at The Masters in April because he will take some beating!
This week we have two Tournaments to get stuck into and a real poser for punters in the first one The Joburg Open. Charles Schwartzel starts a very short priced fave after doing two demolition jobs in his last two starts. Are we a layer or a player at that price? To misquote the bard slightly, whether tis nobler to back a player at short odds in a 165 runner field as he may suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune or putt badly. OK that was more than slightly misquoting the bard but you get my drift, surely backing short in golf is the way to the poorhouse! Well my members will find out this morning which way we are going.
In America it’s the Pebble Beach pro am where players are joined by American sports stars you have never heard off and comedian Bill Murray will walk round talking nonsense to the crowd whilst the commentators howl with laughter as if it’s the funniest thing you have ever seen. It carries a punters warning as not only do the players get fed up with who they are stuck with but also the first three rounds are rotated over three courses then everyone comes back to Pebble Beach for Sunday. Pebble Beach the most visually stunning course in the world and worth putting up with Bill Murrays zany antics so watch with the sound down if you have to.
