Whisper it but we are just over a week from the greatest golfing and golf betting week of the year The Masters.
The PGA Tour rather than giving us a gentle week before have now moved The Valero Texas Open to this week instead of before when it was the week after The Masters. I’m not sure if it’s a great idea as this is one seriously tough Golf course although after players complaining about it we are told it has been made ever so slightly easier.
You may think oh the poor golfers not but the reason for the softening is that a week before a Major Tournament players are looking to build confidence so they simply won’t show up if they think the course may make a fool of them. The benefits of playing the week before are that a good showing this week will give a player momentum going into the biggest week of the year. One player who is playing this week but is running out of time to build any momentum is Rory Mcilroy who threw in a very ordinary performance again last week in Houston. He claimed afterwards to be happy with his game though I doubt his advisors will be when they see the stat that for fairways and greens hit he was not even in the top 60, hardly going to give Woods and the others insomnia is it.
If he were to miss the cut this week and it’s a distinct possibility then I really think he is in big trouble. Woods and Mickelson have chosen to practice near Augusta this week and both will be fully focussed on adding to there collection of green jackets.
We will worry about that next week in our Masters column special. This week the ratings have thrown up a win bet and two very big priced outsiders to set us up nicely for the biggest golf betting week of them all.
Back next Tuesday.
