We have two of the most exciting weeks of the whole year to come on the PGA Tour in the shape of the Wells Fargo and then next week the mighty Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass where so many of us ply our trade on the Playstation3!
The Wells Fargo is played at Quail Hollow which must be one of the toughest courses on Tour. It finishes with the Green Mile (no not the Tom Hanks film with the prisoner who cures everyone, he dies at that end for those who haven’t seen it) but a devilishly difficult three hole finish that most years determines the winner.
This is an incredibly awkward course for driving the ball and has one of the highest stats on tour for players driving into the rough so we need to be on good drivers. The course record here is owned by young Rory with his incredible last round 62 to storm through the field two years ago. Phil Mickelson says it’s the best golf he has ever seen and in my view it’s in the top 5 rounds of golf ever played. As defending Champ he nearly retained it too until succumbing to Ricki Fowler in the play off. Those two will both have much to prove this week as they are both out of form but it may be this place sparks them into life. Fowler has every shot in the book but he has played very gung ho this year and it has resulted in horrendous scores at times whilst Rory loses interest if he is out of contention and has let himself down a few times. They are both very very wealthy young men and it’s showing at times.
To win this week a player will have to play smart and accept mistakes and dropped shots because they are inevitable here. Hopefully American TV will be able to squeeze some shots in between adverts this week as the coverage that sky then screen is becoming more bizarre by the week. Nick Faldo appears to have gone completely mad and spent ten minutes discussing the colour of a players trousers whilst the other commentator Jim Nance gets more obsessed by showing and discussing the met life airship blimp that we see every week. “I sure wish I was up there Nick on a day like this” he exclaimed on Sunday, believe me Jim we wish you were too.
American TV will not affect our picks as we go all out for winners over the next two weeks. Last year we picked Ricki Fowler at a big juicy 33/1 and we are going pot hunting again as I’m convinced there will be some shocks this week.
I really hope to see you on the fairways with us this week.
Back next Tuesday.
