This week the top players are tuning up for the Open Championship next week at Muirfield (more of that in our dedicated Open special column next week) but there is the small matter of the Scottish Open this week to deal with first.
This weeks event takes place at Castle Stuart in Inverness and is visually stunning. The course is reasonably new and many were sad this Tournament left Loch Lomond but that venue was a nightmare for spectators so the tournament was brought to the more accessible Castle Stuart. There is also the fact this unlike Loch Lomond is a links course which many of the players want to play in the week before the Open.
Phil Mickelson is the star name but my usual cautionary tale about the great man on such occasions. Mickelson would not be averse to winning if the Tournament fell into his lap but he uses the week before Majors to practice shots and you really don’t want to bet cash on somebody who is practicing and not going full out for a win.
Reigning Open Champion Ernie Els comes here in rude health after an excellent US Open and a win in Germany. He will fancy the job this week and is starting to get some consistency back in his game. One player not in form is reigning Scottish Open winner Jeeve Milka Singh who is on a wretched run and would need to evoke some of the play which made him a surprise winner last year.
