It’s not easy even when you are the reigning Masters champion to lead from wire to wire as Adam Scott proved in at times embarrassing circumstances last Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. After a stupendous first round 62 which sent him miles clear and odds on in the betting at one stage during round two he was seven shots clear and making the game seem oh so easy.
What happened over the last round and a half for most players would be a career ender as the likeable Aussie through shots away like confetti and found the water as though he was aiming at it to end up finishing third. At one stage he was 1/7 to put this field to bed but it proved beyond him showing the Masters win has not cured him of the terrible nerves and anxiety which saw him chuck the Open away to Ernie Els two years ago. It was painful viewing at times as Scott’s relaxed swing became as tight as the Gambling Don at the BetFan Tipster’s Xmas Party.
Scott has come back from these situations namely to win the Masters but anyone who is thinking of unloading on him to retain at Augusta needs to be aware that he seemed incredibly jumpy and that is not what you need round Amen Corner. On pure talent Scott and young Rory are playing a different game to the rest but this game is about Sunday afternoons and I’m afraid Scotty has to prove himself all over again before you put your cash on the line.
This week the PGA Tour pitches into Texas for the Valero Texas Open @ TPC San Antonio which really is a superb test of golf. Last year Martin Laird produced one of the great rounds of golf to win with a 63 to pip Rory. That was about the last good round Laird played and he will hope this week will spring him back into life. Unusually tight fairways here mean this is about keeping your ball in play and thinking your way round. This is such a good course it wouldn’t surprise me to see it join the US Open roster and whoever wins this will have earned it. With the Masters just three weeks away the Top players will be fine tuning their games and looking for a real confidence boost ahead of the big week of the whole year.
