It’s here at last the players championship at Sawgrass also known as the fifth major. This Pete dye designed stadium course fills the players with terror as water is everywhere no more than on the infamous 17th the island hole.
We have all become experts at this hole over the years playing on the PlayStation or Xbox. The reality that will face the players this week if the wind gets up is horrific as there are 4000 people almost sucking the ball into the water. Someone will have a seven or an eight here and completely play themselves out of the tournament and have to put on a brave face as many people find it absolutely hilarious just a few feet away.
Garcia blew the tournament here but going in the water and many a great player has met a watery grave. Let’s be honest it is one of the most fun holes to watch of the year and how though find sawgrass gimmicky including the great tiger I feel it is one of the ultimate tests of players all round game.
We need players who can grind out four good solid rounds as no one goes very low round here very often have trouble lurks with the rough, difficult greens and liquid everywhere.
Straight driving is a must here as you do not want to hit your second shots from the rough where the ball simply will not hold on the slippery greens. Know one will hit every green here so we’re looking for players with excellent scrambling skills and short games.
If the truth is told many of the top players in the world do not like this week because they don’t do very well here. I fear young Rory would rather not be here but he got stick for not turning up one year so has made the trek but I suspect with little enthusiasm. It certainly does not suit his game so he makes a weak fave.
This is wide open and the betting supports that theory with many, many players holding strong claims. At golf bet profits we have four major bets this week and aim to land a big pot. All the players will have bad spells and bad holes and the lead will change hands many times that is just the kind of tournament this is.
Let’s hope our players can stay dry and stay focused in what is sure to be a fascinating week. I look forward to seeing you on the fairways.
Back next Tuesday.
