Europe are no better than even money to win the 2014 Ryder Cup after a wonderful comeback to retain the Cup last weekend. No side had won away from home trailing by four points ahead of the singles. There were many pivotal moments but the key point was earned by Justin Rose who beat Phil Mickelson on the 18th hole.
Ian Poulter was 8/1 to be leading scorer for the Europeans. He won all his four matches and was inspired over the three days of competition. He may not have won a major but he proved himself to have tremendous heart and motivation. Poulter can now be backed at 33/1 to win this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.
The major sporting event of the weekend is the Prix de l’Arc de Triopmhe at Longchamp racecourse in Paris. Snow Fairy, Nathanial and Danedream will not be contesting the premier race in Europe for a variety of reasons but the race received a boost when some intriguing riding arrangements were confirmed this week.
Frankie Dettori has been booked to ride Camelot for the Coolmore team. He is retained by the powerful Godolphin outfit but now has to share the best rides with Silvestre de Souza and Mickael Barzalona
Dettori last rode for Ballydoyle aboard Scorpion in the 2005 St Leger. This will lead to speculation that Coolmore may hire him, especially as stable jockey Joseph O’Brien is struggling to keep his weight down and his flat racing career may soon be ending.
The domestic football season now enters the important autumn and winter stage. The Premier League will now take shape after the early matches. The two Manchester clubs have been favourites at different times of the early part of the season.
United became the new favourites after City made an unconvincing start to the season. That changed again after the red team in the city lost to Spurs at Old Trafford last weekend. Both sides are involved in the Champions league for which Barcelona are 9/4 favourites.
The key to the outcome of the Premiership will be how both clubs can handle their commitments in the league and Europe. Alex Ferguson has a vast amount of experience of managing this situation and his side are more likely of the two to be successful in both competitions.
Back next Friday.
