Wincanton stage a strong looking card today and at 3.10 stage a decent looking veterans chase.
Veterans chases are proving more and more popular and are mostly staged for horses of ten years old or more.
It gives horses who may have become badly handicapped and unable to win under normal open conditions the chance to regain that winning feeling and it’s also a chance for the public to see these popular old stagers battle it out against each other.
The difference between Jumps Racing and the Flat is that on the whole we get more accustomed to seeing the horses return year after year so we build up an implied relationship and affection with them.
One such horse for me is The Sawyer from the Bob Buckler yard he really is a brave horse who has run some mighty races and done his connections proud over the years. At 13 he is in the twilight of his career and is struggling off his well earned Handicap mark. That said he retains some of his old sparkle and against weak opposition I think the 16/1 on offer is decent each way value. The heart should never come into it when cold cash is involved but it would be great to see the old boy lead them a merry dance this afternoon and do you know what if he gets an uncontested lead it might just happen!
Have a great days racing and lets hope more courses stage these veterans events.
Back next Thursday.
