I arrived on the Knavesmire yesterday for what felt like the first day of school. The course is having major redevelopment work and the recent stormy weather meant it resembled a muddy building site but hey it’s still the Worlds Premier Track.
It really has been shocking weather up here so my texted warning to star columnist Andrew Bell to wear Sun protection was met with some derision if not mocking. I took my own advice and arrived plastered with Hawaiian Tropic which gents has the added bonus of excellent sun protection (well the excellent bit might be pushing it) and a holiday smell which will always attract positive comments from the opposite sex (the always bit might be pushing it).
When I arrived Mr Bell mistook the lotion for perspiration and claimed I was sweating like a games teacher at a parents evening, this led to some chuckling from his companions. Sadly Mr Bell after an afternoon of paddock watching in the sun had the look of a man permanently embarrassed. Very sad to see and so avoidable.
Today is Dante day which is still the Premier Derby Trial whatever nonsense you may hear. Many a horse has won here and gone on to Epsom glory and in True Story we have a potential superstar. He was breathtaking at Newmarket and the further he went the better he looked. He will never have run on ground this soft but it should improve him. Kieran Fallon is back in the big time and will take huge confidence that he retains the ride. The great man will not lie down and it seems crazy now but people last season were beginning to say he was finished!
He is a maestro round York and always has been and the Fallon story has a few more chapters before it’s finished. Now wouldn’t that be a good tell all autobiography? I bet Tommo would be first in the queue at Waterstones trying to wangle a free copy!
Two more days to land big gambles and see the top jockeys and top class horses do their thing at the Worlds greatest racecourse.
Have a great punting week and if you start thinking of a Hawaiian paradise Island, today, I may well have just walked by.
Back next Thursday.
