Racing has been decimated by the dreadful weather leaving the racing media with nothing to do but talk about Barney Curley for another week!
For what it’s worth I’m never upset to hear of Bookmakers losing money in fact it gives me a warm glow very similar to that of the young paper boy in the old ready brek adverts. However I do feel sorry for punters whose money it is that Curley has actually won, who had bet there money in the races which included the four horses involved in the coup.
They may not feel too keen to bet there hard earned on a morning before they go to work next time and that’s the real issue. Punters have to believe that their horse particularly on the all weather is involved in a race where not only is it trying but the others are too and have been in there previous races. I have had a rule for over a decade I don’t bet or tip in races that involve horses connected to Barney Curley, nothing personal it’s just what I do, myself and my clients are only casual observers.
Do I bet on the All Weather yes I do and I advise others to but I’m more concerned by the season at the lack of stewarding and calling to account strange rides which follow alarming drifts on the betting exchanges. Lets all be adults here, low prize money and the ability to bet a horse to lose were always going to be a dreadful cocktail, a bit like vodka and red bull for the younger readers. So what you have to do is beef up the security and the stewarding and start hauling the usual suspects in and fining or banning them. The racing authorities reluctance to do so suggests they either don’t care or think there is no point both of which are worrying.
On to better news Wincanton is on today giving us a rare sighting of jump racing and fingers crossed Wetherby is on for Saturday where Stable Line Gold have a monster bet lined up to finish January with a bang. The wet and gloom will soon be gone and a young mans thoughts will turn to Cheltenham, makes you feel happier just thinking about it doesn’t it. A bit like that paper boy in the ready brek adverts.
Back next Thursday.
