It was great to see Newmarket yesterday it at last feels like we are into the flat season proper after the phony war after the Lincoln where we see endless late season Jumps with the BHA seemingly determined to bring us endless all year round jumps when surely the horses and Training staff could use a significant break.
Newmarket today stages some must see action in the form of Maidens full of unraced two and three year olds, a high quality sprint and some group races. It really is a superb fare. My advice would be even if you are the type of punter who does not like to bet in Maidens or races full of unraced horses then still watch these races and make some notes. There will be winners and powerful form lines emanating from this meeting in the subsequent months of that there is no doubt.
Richard Fahey sends horses down from Malton to take on the big boys and as his string gets better quality each year so it becomes a fairer fight between him and the big Southern yards. He will continue to churn out winners in the coming weeks. It was good to see Sir Henry Cecil bang in an early season winner after what must have been a difficult few weeks with the release of a far from flattering biography from Brough Scott which the master Trainer has moved swiftly to distance himself from. Cecil claims he will not sign copies if approached so if you fancy a copy signed you will have to be subtle and switch covers so he thinks he is signing a year in the life of Frankel, only kidding of course!
I haven’t read it but you would think after coming through a gruelling battle with cancer perhaps they could have laid off the old boy for a while. It will be a difficult season because they will never come close to what Frankel achieved but Cecil has some nice horses to go to war with.
