On Saturday we see the first classic of the season the 2000 Guineas and it is as competitive a renewal as usual this time around. We are all faced with the puzzle that this race often presents namely do we back horses that we have seen this year and know are fit and well and have definitely trained on as three year olds or do we trust in the superstar from last year who hasn’t raced at three so far.
In this case the superstar is the unbeaten Dawn Approach who just got better and better as the season wore on but has to prove that he has trained on and that he will see out this stiff mile. Dawn Approach showed such blistering speed last year that I have a sneaking suspicion that even if he does get the mile and outclass this field at the weekend his very best distance will be six furlongs.
The proven three year olds who may lack the ratings of Dawn Approach are Toranado and Garswood. The Hannon trained Toranado and the Fahey trained Garswood both impressed when reappearing at Newmarket but those races lacked any real quality however they both showed a liking for the track and potent turns of foot. Toranado was thought of as more of a Derby prospect last year but certainly didn’t look short of speed on reappearance, if he is to win he will have to try and draw the sting out of Dawn Approach and not let this develop into a sprint. Garswood is exciting the team at Richard Faheys and they feel they could have their first classic winner on their hands which would be yet another feather in the cap of this yard.
Of the others that man Aiden O’Brian runs Cristoforo Columbo and Mars the Derby fave, I understand the emphasis has shifted as to who is the best for this race after Mars did a staggering piece of work last week. It would be some performance if Mars could come from winning a Dundalk Maiden to taking the 2000 Guineas but would you really put it past this man.
Godolphin don’t seem to have a runner this year maybe they are having a bank holiday outing instead who knows!
Enjoy a great classic weekend one bet is a certainty that is my Stableline Gold members will have the best inside information there is as we aim to land some big classic weekend gambles.
Back next Thursday.
