We are now at day 2 of the Chester meeting and we saw yesterday on day 1 what a unique and at times bizarre place to have a racecourse this is.
Several horses yesterday could not handle the nature of the track where they are basically always turning left. This place certainly suits smaller more athletic horses and also given the huge crowds (today they are expecting over 30 thousand for ladies day) horses who can handle noise and commotion because the crowd are within touching distance at all times.
Todays big race is the Derby Trial and though not similar to Epsom it’s an interesting place to hold a trial because you have a big noisy crowd and a strange track. Trainers will be fairly confident if a horse can handle Chester that he will handle Epsom.
Aiden O’Brian certainly knows about winning Derbys and he sends over a major buzz horse in Ireland in the shape of Ruler of the World who can be backed at Even money as I write and this once raced son of Galileo really could be anything. He is closely related to Duke of Marmalade and is producing some serious work at home. Another major plus as to why he should be backed today is the presence of Ryan Moore aboard as opposed to the Trainers son Joseph who struggled here yesterday. He was also poor at Newmarket over the weekend constantly riding from too far back and you really do wonder how much longer the owners will tolerate it.
So back Ruler of the World in the 2.45 Chester Vase if not the World it will certainly rule Chester.
Back next Thursday.
