The race has had its critics over many years but its still the race that stops the nation for ten minutes at least and the Don is here at Aintree to watch it all.
I’ve been coming here for over 25 years and to be fair the course and the facilities have improved immensely and it now really is a top class facility. The new fences seem to have not altered the character of the course and of course what never changes here at Aintree is the starter has no idea what he is doing. Yesterday he took four attempts to start the Topham and when he finally let them go they were in less of a line than the first attempt.
The news on track yesterday was that the jockeys were going to be told very sternly to behave this afternoon, we will see it really is shambolic and when you think of the money riding on todays race a better system should be found.
So what of todays race, well I’m going to give you two against the field so that means only 38 horses can stop us!
The first is a horse trained by the man who has to win if he is going to be crowned champion trainer, Paul Nicholls and the horse is Join Together. He ran well over these fences in the Autumn and the longer the race went the better he got. I’ve rarely heard him mentioned in the previews which are all about the Irish horses but believe me this horse has a massive chance and I’m told the great man has him spot on.
Our second bet is a horse who is absolutely useless anywhere but Aintree, he has won the Topham on three occasions and finally at age 12 he goes for the big one. The horse is Always Waining and he is like Red Rum in that he is so crafty over these fences that he stays out of trouble. He will be up there near the front out of trouble and he looks set to run a mighty race. I’ve no doubts he will get the extra distance in fact he may well improve for it.
So there you go lets have luck in running and hope they all come back safely.
