Day 5 of Ascot and the Bookmakers have been the ones grinning from ear to ear. I’ve never known so many races where the first three places have been filled with huge priced horses. The fact the placepot paid five grand one day tells you who is likely to be smiling at the close of play.
Festivals though are a marathon not a sprint and I have a sneaky feeling the punters will hit back on the final day. The Queen has had a good week though and seemed to enjoy landing the Gold Cup. It looked like her racing manager John Warren was about to throw her in the air or at least slap her on the back. The Queen whatever your views on Royalty is good for racing and puts it on the front page for something good as opposed to steroids and jockeys fixing races.
Stoutey who has had a couple of lean years is back in the big time this week and the old master will be keen to stick two fingers up to those in the media who said he was finished. Stoute will never be the most genial of characters and he doesn’t often say much in interviews but is peerless when it comes to training older horses.
Our bet today runs in the final race the two mile five marathon at 5.35. This race is so long many of the jockeys take a packed lunch and you don’t have to be Inspector Morse to realise it’s stamina that wins the day. One horse who has that in abundance is Cosimo de Medici. This fellow stays longer than an Asylum seeker and Trainer Hughie Morrison comes here instead of going to Goodood on Friday night. The trainer was desperate to book Richard Hughes and the Champion jockeys presence is a huge bonus. He was a good second last time at Goodwood which will have put him spot on and that distance two miles is on the short side for him these days. He will be galloping when many have cried enough.
Take the 25/1 each way with William Hill this morning and lets finish the week with a bang.
Back next Saturday.
