Queen Mother Champion Chase

March 11, 2015 By Ed Leave a Comment

Ok we had a good profit in the first race of the series with the selection finishing 1st and 3rd , pretty obvious with the winner and Josses hill getting up to take the place money.

Any way we move on to the Queen Mother and see what we can find for this one.
Ok the 5 main contenders for the race from the ratings are :-
1. Champagne Fever 5/1
2. Sprinter Scare 3/1
3. Dodging Bullets 9/2
4. Mr Mole 6/1
5. Sire De Grugy 7/2
They are the main protagonists as due to the fact that winner has come from the top 5 in the market over the last 6 years so we will concentrate on theses.
Campagne Fever
• Odds rank 4
• Contender rank 1
• Class rank 5
• Win % 50
Ok these are the only ratings that this one qualifies in all the other ratings it falls well behind up against the other runners.
Sprinter Sacre
• Odds rank 1
• Contender rank 2
• Projected rank 1
• Average rank 1
• Distance rank 5
• LTO rank 1
• Class rank 3
• Good race in class rank 2
• Win % 78
• Offical rating 1
What can you say this one qualifies in all the ratings and smashes the averages for all the ratings , but these may be a little skewed due to the fact that before its last run it hadn’t run for a year.
Dodging Bullets
• Odds rank 3
• Projected rank 3
• Average rank 2
• Distance rank 3
• LTO rank 4
• Good race in class rank 1
• Offical rating 3
The dodge qualifies 7 out of the 10 ratings and in those beats the average in all but is in the lower range of the distance ratingand falls well short in the win % for the winners of this race
Mr Mole
• odds rank 5
• contenders rank 3
these are only ratings that this horse can justify being a contender and it also falls down in the averages and range of the other ratings
Sire De Grugy
• odds rank 2
• projected rank 2
• average rank 3
• LTO rank 2
• Class rank 2
• Offical Rating 2
Qualifies from 6 of the 10 ratings and does reasonably well in the other ratings average and range wise.

Notoriously this race doesn’t supply any big shocks with the winner coming from the top 5 in the market and we also know that in the last 6 running’s the winner has been the favourite 3 times even the places have been filled with the top 5 in the betting so we really don’t have that much room for manoeuvre when it comes to the place market as well.
If Sprinter Sacre can come on from his come back run then he it will be definitely the one to beat.
Sire De Grugy had a comeback run before winning the next time out but I’m not sure about the quality of that race.
Dodging Bullets is a consistent enough runner and will always be there or there abouts with its stamina
Champagne fever is no doubt a very good horse but just falls short in a lot of the ratings compared to the rest of the contender field

Mr Mole had a very good race LTO giving the field saome 10 length before a great ride from the champ brought him home, but not quite sure if the other horses in the race gave all there runnings and does really get let down by its other non qualifying ratings.

With all the above in mind I’m thinking if Sprinter Scare can return to old form he has this in the bag.

I will play
Sprinter Scare for the win as there is no real value in playing the eachway market.

Good luck everyone

After an average February for tipping it was a good tonic to start March off with a nice double 7/2 and evens with my other selection finishing second after taking it up jumping the last only to be beat by a very smart young horse who had plenty in hand close home and could be anything. It is good to be in the top performers table with a over 55% strike rate and I am just hoping I can stay there.

The Lambourn wizard Nicky Henderson (8/1 with Paddy Power to be 2015 Festival top trainer) hosted a media visit at his Seven Barrows yard just to the north of Lambourn in Berkshire last week.

The most successful trainer ever at The Festival, with 51 successes, talked of his hopes for the four-day Cheltenham meeting next week.

His highest-profile runner is superb two-mile chaser, Sprinter Sacre (3/1), who is continuing a comeback in the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase on Wednesday, March 11.

Sprinter Sacre won the Grade One chase in 2013 in great style but missed out last year after recuperating from an irregular heartbeat.

The nine-year-old had his first run since December, 2013 at Ascot last month, finishing a promising second in the Grade One Sodexho Clarence House Chase to Dodging Bullets.

Henderson said: “We are as good as we have been for a very, very long time with Sprinter Sacre. He is right there – spot on. We have had our run and he has done plenty of work since and he does not need to go to a racecourse (for a gallop).”

“We will probably go to Mandown (part of The Jockey Club’s Lambourn gallops) on Wednesday. He worked on Saturday (Feb 21) and schooled on Friday (Feb 20). As always the better the ground, the better for him. He travelled well at Ascot – like the best horse in the race – and just got tired at the second last.”

“We knew he had to have a run and it was there or nowhere. The ground was not bad and I cannot make that an excuse. They went a right good gallop and set out to test him so it could have been a kinder race for him. He seems in good shape and since Ascot has been great.”

“We have been waiting for that spark which wasn’t there last year – you cannot force it to happen and have to wait. He was absolutely, ridiculously unbeatable a couple of years ago – I am not saying we are totally unbeatable next month, but he is in seriously good shape. He has done everything we have asked him to do. It will be a great race (Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase). Sire De Grugy has a crown we want back. I think we have a good chance – I am not confident but pretty hopeful.”

The trainer is looking forward to L’Ami Serge running in the opening Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle on Tuesday, March 10, Josses Hill in the next race, the Racing Post Arkle Chase and Vaniteaux in the Stan James Champion Hurdle on the same day, with Ma Filleule in the Ryanair Chase on Thursday, March 12.

Then on the last day, Friday, March 13, he is pleased with his three runners in the JCB Triumph Hurdle, Peace And Co, Top Notch and Hargam, while Bobs Worth goes for a second Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup success following on from his 2013 victory.

Henderson said: “Ma Filleule came to herself in the spring of last year and she is back there – it was a good run at Ascot the other day (when second in the Grade One Betfair Ascot Chase). We have reason to believe she can find a length or two on that.”

“Luckily, I don’t have to split my three in the JCB Triumph Hurdle. I would be hopeful with one of them and I have got three shots. They are three lovely horses, they are all entitled to go there and are good enough to go there. They compare well with the horses we have had in the past for the race.”

“Bob’s Worth has only had the one run in the Lexus this season but that was always the plan. He has one more bit of work to do and the plan is to go to Newbury on Sunday if the ground is not too bad. He is fresh and well. Barry (Geraghty) was pleased with him in Ireland where the ground was desperate. He wants better ground.”

“In normal circumstances, I would be pretty keen on L’Ami Serge. He was very impressive in the Tolworth – he quickened well, is classy and experienced. Soft ground won’t worry him.”

“They will go quick in the Arkle and Barry says that will suit Josses Hill. It will be easier for the horse to jump well if they go a good gallop.”

“I still think Vaniteux is a very good horse and he is very, very well. Good ground would be important to him and he has not had it this season.”

Danny Cook is looking at a lengthy ban after testing positive for Cocaine, the 31 year old jockey will miss Cheltenham in a act of foolishness, he said last Friday in the Racing Post.

Former Newmarket trainer Gerry Blum died last week at the age of 90 and Bruce Raymond, who rode many winners for Blum said ”He was a great man and we had a lot of winners together in sellers and claimers at places like Yarmouth and Warwick.”

I fancy L’Ami Serge (4/1 with hills) to get us off to a good start to the Cheltenham Festival on the Tuesday in the Sky Bet Supreme Novice Hurdle. The New One is my bet for the Champion Hurdle on the first day 3/1 with all the firms. The banker bet of the week has to be Un De Sceaux (4/6 with Betway) on the Tuesday in the Racing Post Arkle Chase.

Bidourey is my advice for the Imperial Cup Handicap at Sandown on Saturday.

Back next Thursday.

Wednesday Eyecatchers

December 24, 2014 By admin Leave a Comment

It’s Christmas and Chelsea are top of the pile and one has to say it’s well deserved. Man City look the only logical challengers but they will have to keep their full squad fit if they are to run the Pensioners close.

I suppose you could class John Terry as a pensioner in footballing terms but he is playing out of his skin. He is the type of guy you would want in the trenches next to you as he will run through a brick wall and at the same time you will know he is not round your house chatting up your wife.

We have no racing until Boxing Day but then a couple of days of superb jumping at Kempton with the highlight the King George.

I’m going to be backing Cue Card from the Tizzard yard. He ran an honourable 2nd last year behind Silvinianco Conti but I believe he might be able to reverse the placings this year.

After Kempton we can start counting down the days to Cheltenham in March. The one thing I’m really hoping for on the jumping scene is that come the big festival that both Sprinter Sacre and Sire De Grugy both get to run in the Queen Mother Chase as it will in my opinion be the best jumping event since Arkle took on Mill House many years ago.

EYECATCHERS

We had another winner last week with The Young Master although he didnt take a lot of finding.

ARTIFICIAL SURFACES

Keep Kicking trainer S.Dow – Just found one too good in Planetoid at Lingfield and he can pick up a staying race on the polytrack.

Opera Buff trainer J.Santos – Ran in the same race as the above leading into the straight and a drop in trip seems sensible.

Planetoid trainer J.Best – He is on a winning streak and there is no reason it can’t continue.

Baine trainer J.Eustace – He made a slow start which is something you can’t get away with at Southwell and with a better break next time he should go close.

JUMPERS

La Reve trainer Lucy Wadham – Ran a super race behind The Young Master only receiving a few pounds and I’m sure he can frank the form.

Back next Wednesday but in the mean time I wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas.

The Colonel At The Races

October 23, 2014 By admin Leave a Comment

The leading international online betting and casino company Betway, is the new sponsor of the Queen Mother Champion Chase, one of the highlights of The Festival at Cheltenham next March.

Cheltenham Racecourse is delighted to make the announcement and reveals that the feature of the second day of The Festival, Ladies Day, will be backed by Betway for at least three years.

The Grade One chase, run over two miles and 13 fences, was won in great style last season by Sire De Grugy, trained by Gary Moore, ridden by Jamie Moore and owned by the Preston family & friends, after 11 runners lined up in March, 2014.

The Nicky Henderson-trained Sprinter Sacre, the 2013 victor in imperious fashion, makes his comeback this season and both horses could take each other on in the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase on Wednesday, March 11, 2015.

Ian Renton, Managing Director of Cheltenham Racecourse, commented: “I am delighted to welcome Betway to Cheltenham as the sponsor of the Queen Mother Champion Chase for the next three years.

“This is Betway’s first venture into race sponsorship and it is great news that they have chosen to work with us at Cheltenham on such a high-profile race as the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase.”

Last weeks impressive Redcar winner Puissant looks a very smart young horse judged on his maiden win last Friday, Marco Botti’s Galileo colt looks capable of holding his own in better company next season at three.

Together Forever landed the (Group 1) Fillies Mile at Newmarket last week and is now 20/1 for the 1,000 Guineas next May.

Kieren Fallon plans to move to the states before the flat season closes its door’s. The 49 year old six-time champion said ”I have always wanted to go to the America, I’d like to go back to California to try and get the buzz back.”

It was great to see Lady Cecil in the winners circle at Ascot on Saturday when Noble Mission landed the Champion Stakes for Warren Place beating Al Kazeem in a driving finish, I bet Sir Henry was looking down from his big cloud with a tear in his eye it was a great day.

The New One was back with a bang at Kempton on Sunday landing the odds of 2/11 with ease in the Listed William Hill Hurdle and is now 4/1 for the Stan James Champion Hurdle come March at the Cheltenham festival.

I have backed Main Sequence E/W at 7/1 anti-post for the Breeders’ Cup, which is run at Santa Anita on November 1.

The David Pipe trained Dynaste will go very close at Aintree on Saturday in the Monet’s Garden Old Roan Chase.

The 2014 Flat Season

March 20, 2014 By admin Leave a Comment

The 2014 Flat Season

The Moore family had a much better Cheltenham than the Hughes’s and something similar can happen during the Flat season which begins properly with the Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster. The all weather has begun but it’s the Lincoln meeting in Yorkshire that marks the start of Flat racing on turf.

Ryan Moore is the son of Gary and brother of Jamie, the trainer and rider of Sire De Grugy who won the Champion Chase. Richard Hughes is the son of Dessie whose festival dreams were totally shattered by the fatal fall of Our Conor in the Champion Hurdle. Hughes is odds on favourite to win the jockey’s championship for the third year in succession but there are valid reasons to oppose him at the relative odds.

Hughes is the stable jockey to Richard Hannon junior who has taken over from his father as the yard’s trainer. The operation is being described as a well oiled machine and the transition is expected to be smooth. However, they said that about David Moyes when he took over from Sir Alex and look what’s happening at Old Trafford

Richard Hannon senior will still have some involvement but ultimately the decision making process is with his son. He has been assisting his father for a number of years and will not introduce any new methods to make an impact in his new job. The elder member of the family will continue to deal with owners but his son has ultimate responsibility for the financial well being of the stable.

There are precedents for a son inheriting the role of trainer from his Dad but the most recent cases are with jumps families. Donald McCain inherited his father’s stable and won a Grand National and races at Cheltenham immediately. David Pipe now runs the family business but Martin is still involved, though everybody knows whose boss. The Pipes had three winners at Cheltenham and David has also already won a Grand National.

However, the transition could be more difficult for a Flat yard. The turnover of horses is greater and there is more emphasis on identifying potential champions. Richard Hannon has 160 two year olds in his stable this season and his father has no experience of training them. A higher turnover of inmates means fresh owners to deal with and that presents more challenges than in a jumps yard that has changed hands.

A jockey needs to be dedicated and hungry for the Flat championship and after two years of relentless pursuit of the title Hughes may not be as committed this year. He is some years older than Moore and might be more focused on winning the best races than building up a huge total of winners. Moore may be more likely to travel to Windsor on Monday nights in the summer.

When quoted in the Racing Post about his prospects of winning the title again Hughes was not too convincing in an assessment of the new season. “ A third title would be nice, but I’ll just play things the same as usual – just try to ride plenty of winners up to Goodwood and then if I have to work a bit harder I will.” he said. I’m sure in the past he’s sounded more determined and proactive in pursuit of the title.

The champion jockey rode his first two winners in English Classics last season and those rides may have given him a taste for the bigger races. Having won the title for the last two seasons he could now put quality over quantity. He rode 17 more winners than Moore last season and that was having dedicated himself to the job. It could be that Moore has the hunger this season to ride more winners than Hughes and looks the jockey to back at the relative prices.

The Lincoln is one of the major handicaps of the season but without the race the start of the Flat is uninspiring. I think the turf season should start later in the year after the Grand National and not so soon after Cheltenham. It seems strange that a major Flat race is being run in between the two major jumps meetings of the season.

The racing and national press will cover the race but most race fans are still in jumps mode and surely it could be better marketed after the National. The Easter weekend can complicate matters but I think the Lincoln should be take place on the next Saturday after the National. Even so finding the winner is devilishly hard whenever the race is run.

At the time of writing 10 days ahead of the race its 16/1 the field and unfortunately my knowledge of the form does not extend to identifying potential winners. A little knowledge could be a dangerous think but I know Levitate and Brae Hill have run well in major handicaps in the past. There also a horse called Haaf A Sixpence that likes a big field and straight track and he will get both at Doncaster.

The subplot of the season will be the race for the jockey’s championship between Hughes and Moore. One significant injury could swing the balance one way or the other but Hughes’ reliance on so many juveniles is an intangible factor and that means Moore is my selection to outscore his nearest rival between now and November.

Cheltenham Festival Preview

March 6, 2014 By admin Leave a Comment

Where in England could you have seen a world snooker champion, buy a signed picture at auction of two footballers holding the Champions League trophy and the former assistant to the most successful trainer in the history of the Cheltenham Festival 300 yards away from the start of an iconic horse race? The Old Railway Club on Melling Road in Aintree is the answer and the occasion was Jumping Prospects Cheltenham Festival preview evening.

The picture showed Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher holding the European Cup after the miracle of Istanbul in 2005. John Parrott and Ben Pauling are the gentlemen in question and they were joined on the panel by the trainer Charlie Longsdon and form expert Andy Holding at an event hosted by John Morris of the sponsoring organisation. The night also raised some money for a deserving local charity as donations were requested for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

The club is literally next door to Aintree racecourse and from the car park you can see the start of the National and the empty grandstands that will be full of life on the first Saturday in April. Mister Parrott is a blue nose, which means an Everton supporter in these parts, and being asked to auction the picture of a trophy won by Liverpool was clearly galling. In a brief chat he said he thought Ronnie O’Sullivan would win the world championships again.

For a non-racing professional and former player and commentator from another sport Parrott’s view were as cogent and informed as the other members of the panel. The night was structured around the grade 1 races though the handicaps were discussed briefly for each day when time allowed. On a night of revealing snippets and insights the highlight for me was an analysis of Hinterland’s chances in whichever race the horse contests.

Hinterland won a novice chase at Sandown over two miles earlier this season. According to the speed figures he covered the distance in three second faster than Sire De Grugy on the same card. Apparently that equates to 15 lengths which means on the basis of speed figures Hinterland is a better horse than Sire De Grugy.

Hinterland still appeared in the betting for the Arkle Chase and Champion Chase six days ahead of the festival, at 14/1 for each race. It will be interesting to see which race Paul Nicholls selects for the horse but at the odds the Arkle for novices would make the most sense. If trusting the accuracy of the clock and the validity of speed figures Hinterland looks one of the outstanding bets of the meeting.

The other horse at a big price that received a mainly positive mention was Killultagh Vic in the bumper. The Willie Mullins trained entry is the fastest horse in the race on speed figures and the trainer clearly knows how to win this contest. The form of the horse does not look the strongest but given the evidence of the clock he could be the runner that improves the trainer’s already outstanding record in the race.

So I would say the three headline bets to take out of the preview are Hinterland and Killultagh Vic and Ronnie to win the snooker. Before those matters were discussed the key races from each day in order were analysed. There was a consensus that the Champion Hurdle was the race of the meeting. One salient fact that emerged was that last year’s Supreme Novices Hurdle was run in a time 2 seconds faster than the Champion Hurdle on the same afternoon.

In theory that means My Tent Or Yours or Champagne Fever would have beaten Hurricane Fly in the Champion. This is not an exact science but the inference is that last year’s novices were a strong bunch. The New One’s chances were highlighted with the fact that he stays 2 miles four furlongs, an attribute needed in the two mile championship race. A show of hands suggested Hurricane Fly has a 50/50 of winning the race for the third time but the ex-Henderson man is in the Our Conor camp.

Quevega is seen as a banker to win the mares hurdle for the sixth time but Sirene D’Ainay was identified as a horse to back without the favourite. Pendra is the favourite in the last race of the first day and the horse’s trainer, Charlie Longsdon, is expecting a big run. However, he pointed out to win a handicap at the festival you need to have about 10 pounds in hand and didn’t think his horse was quite as well in as that.

Red Sherlock is seen as the best horse in the Neptune Investments Novices Hurdle that opens the card next Wednesday while Morning Assembly was given a good word for the RSA Chase. Sire De Grugy has the best form for the Champion Chase in the absence of Sprinter Sacre, but Hinterland could be the fly in that particular ointment.

Al Ferof was noted as having the form to win the Ryaniar Chase especially over a distance at which he excels. The 7 pounds mare’s allowance for Annie Power makes that horse a solid favourite for the World Hurdle according to the panel. For the Triumph the speed figures point to Calipto but Andy Holden has an interest in Rutherglen. He said the horse had an each way chance and he was tipped by Pricewise in the Racing Post.

The last championship race to be discussed was the Gold Cup, the Blue Riband of steeple chasing. According to the racing professionals Bobs Worth won the race last year despite the ground going against him. It was reported that there was a downpour at Cheltenham on the morning of the race but Bobs Worth was still 7 lengths too good for Sir Des Champs in second place.

Sir Des Champs misses this year’s race due to injury while Silviniaco Conti is unproven at the trip. The word from the racing centres was that Bobs Worth is spot on and the general feeling was that we could see the first multiple winner since the Kauto Star era. Finally John Parrot told a joke about David Moyes. He bought a lamp last week and its sitting in the middle of the table.

Greyhound Master Tipster

January 24, 2014 By admin Leave a Comment

Friday I was going out on a secret mission early doors so it was even more of a rush to send out the newsletter and free tip. Just about managed it before my lift arrived. Back late afternoon to sort out my subscribers tip Sizzling Bolt. Then off to Romford to meet Carpo Nick C and my son Ryan who all came to support my evergreen dog Head iton Tom. We were trying out the chase restaurant this week after visiting the Pavilion last week.

The food was ok but could be improved on I’m sure and there were empty seats around, a sure sign that more could be done.

Bolt fell from the traps that was that, Tommy flew and held on in a photo and free tip Quincy destroyed his opponents. So we all went home happy with a nice few quid in our pockets. I even paid for the meal!

Saturday morning I was entertaining as my 12 day old grand daughter came round to be shown to some of our friends. Poppy-Rose always puts a smile on my face. Though a bigger smile was put on my face later, as my one bet on the horses on Sire De Grugy. I just couldn’t see it getting beat and thought 11/8 was more than fair. I helped myself to a decent bet!

Now I’m not a fan of Crayford but as the Golden Jacket is just round the corner I’m taking more of an interest. Two trial stakes saw two selections resulting in a 2nd and winner. I was very taken with Romantic Rambo our winner but we have missed the boat ante post now. He’s a player for sure in the competition.

Sunday usual kennel visit dogs looked well, all walked and duly rewarded with hot dogs. I was attracted to an early price at Henlow, took a chance to post it first thing as my selection as I knew the RP were all over it and it would be backed. It was all about putting my Henlow theory to the test. The dog in question was Thinking Big was advised at 15/8 and on track went off 5/4f. He missed the break and finished stone last some 12 lengths behind the winner. Theory proved – Enough said!

Monday is always catch up day – race videos and phone calls. Some domestic chores were also required. Blue Monday they call it the most depressing day of the year just exactly how I felt today. I was half interested in a dog at Nottingham but in the end didn’t tip it and and worse didn’t backing it either – won @ 7/2. Annoyed with myself I went to bed.

Tuesday saw opens at Sheffield and b365 tested my resolve as they priced up the races but on closer inspection I decided to pass up the opportunity to bet. Instead I was busy with the Prestige heats at Hall Green looking for ante post selections. The heats were taking place unusually on tomorrow’s morning bags service.

Up early Wednesday to post out my ante post selections, then set off to take my place in the local bookies with the FOBT punters who are generally frequenting the betting shop morning noon and night! All the machines were in operation and there was one other punter like me betting on the dogs. Both my selections Scala Dromin 14/1 who was second and Senior Cup 12/1 who won his heat qualified for next weeks Sky covered Final. Something for my subscribers to look forward too.

Thursday is always about Hove’s open rather than the graded Henlow card for me. The seaside track has proved most fruitful of late. When the advance card came out my eye featured on one hound only. I like when that happens and posted it to subscribers accordingly. Aero Twizzle did exactly what I thought he would and landed us the money at 9/4 advised early price.

The end of another fun packed week for the GMT and time for another free tip for those who want winners but for whatever reason don’t have the conviction to join my service. I was the third best tipster in 2013 winning ten months out of twelve. We’re well on the way to another good month of profit…..what’s not to like…..come join me….if you want to win on the dogs!

The best is saved to the last at the Essex track with Maxine Locke’s Drumna Finch in fine form over the eight bend trip and I expect him to take all the beating again.
