Doncaster in late Summer, what could be finer. I got the train from a sweltering York it’s fair to say I was sweating like a games teacher at a parents night when I arrived on the Town Moor.
The Artful Dodger himself Andy Bell is here resplendent in a pair of red trousers that would see him more at home in the circus ring than the betting ring. But this particular Red Baron is in confident mood ahead of his four day battle with that ghastly Tartan Tipster Jimmy (yes vote) Welsh.
Both get off to a flyer as Jamie Spencer who is riding so much better since deciding to retire at the end of the season makes all in the first. Spencer looked a man with the weight of the World on his shoulders till recently but yesterday he was grinning from ear to ear. The ground was drying out by the minute and believe me it was hot so if it stays dry we will have a very firm ground Leger on Saturday which won’t suit many of the favourites.
Meccas Angel wins the Scarborough Stakes in style and I would think will land a group race before the seasons out. Kingsgate Native who has been a Group 1 winner in the past looks like its had enough and hopefully will be retired soon.
The meeting will step up in quality now as in truth we’re told this was far from Festival materials. Our old mate The Catt was doing his best to keep spirits up but refused to do his Sean Connery impression despite being challenged by Jack Berry before the Legends Race. The Legends race was won by Dale Gibson but the real star was Luke Harvey who looked like he needed oxygen afterwards in what was far from an all action ride on Gambino. I do wonder if this race should have betting on it because some of the veterans appear to have lost their mojo shall we see. Great to see the angry ant Gary Bardwell though a man who is so small on the back of his passport photo it says actual size.
Ladies day today and we are promised a visit from BetFan’s own Satnav King Eddie the Stat. Should he find the course old Satnav will witness a bumper 8 race card during which there will be a bitter feud. I’m not talking about Bell v Tartan but the best dressed lady completion. Although in that kilt Welshy would be no 100/1 shot. Sadly he is busy campaigning spreading his brand of Anti English hatred throughout the highlands so I’m stuck with Bell and Satnav and ten thousand drunken Women, no one said this job would be easy!!!
Today’s top race is the Park Hill Stakes at 2.40 and the bet here is the Aiden O’Brian trained Venus de Milo @ 13/2 with Betvictor. Back this one each way because if we forgive her one bad run she boasts the best form in the race with two excellent runs in top group races. This long galloping straight will be ideal.
Enjoy the rest of the week at Stable Line Gold I told you all to join me and we have had another big winning week and I’m sure I’ve got the winner of the Leger so hop on board the best betting bus in town.
Back next Thursday.
