Trackside In Ireland – By Declan O’Donoghue

May 4, 2019 By admin Leave a Comment

A star is born. On the day after Ruby Walsh hung up his saddle for the last time, Willie Mullins launched a potential superstar at Punchestown on Thursday when Chacun Pour Soi turned the Ryanair Novice Chase into a lap of honour.

Bought by key Willie Mullins man Harold Kirk – who else? – for Rich Ricci in France three years ago it’s been a long wait but what a way to announce yourself by putting both the Arkle and JLT winners Duc Des Genievres and Defi Du Seuil firmly in their places.

And Defi Du Seuil’s trainer Philip Hobbs said without hesitation: “No excuses, it’s quite simple – we were beaten by a very good horse.”

Robbie Power was always confident on the well backed 3/1 chance who was simply different gravy.

He’s seven years old and already looks the part for the Champion Chase. Quite frankly he’d give Altior plenty to think about.

It was a good day for Mullins supporters as earlier My Sister Sarah repaid those who backed her in from 6/1 to 4/1 jolly with a snug win under Paul Townend in the Grade B handicap hurdle.

Townend also steered 9/10 hotpot Elfile home in a Listed Mares Novice and punters were sure The Big Getaway would ensure Mullins won the last four races on the card by scooting home in the concluding bumper.

But alas the 4/7 “good thing” was beaten half a length by Noel Meade’s 8/1 shot Sixshooter. Ouch!

Earlier Unowhatimeanharry had regained top form to win the Ladbrokes Stayers Hurdle for a delighted Harry Fry.

Mark Walsh kicked the 16/1 shot home in front though it might have been very different had Vision Des Flos not made a ‘town halls” of the last.

We Are Betting Against Goals Today

November 25, 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

Their opponents have scored in each of Arsenal’s away fixtures in the Premier League this season. Arsenal have not reached half time in a league match in 2018/19 as the team in front. Both trends are under threat in the fixture at Bournemouth today against a side who have lost their last two Premier League fixtures. The combined statistics over the last 10 matches have produced a both teams to score rate of 62.5% which equates to odds of about 8/13. You can only back that outcome at 4/9 so the value bet is BOTH TEAMS NOT TO SCORE at 7/4 with Ladbrokes.

Wolves were one of the best teams to be promoted to the Premier League when they came up last season. The club has a strong Portuguese influence and that includes the manager who is mates with an agent with connections. There has been a dip in results but not form over the last few matches but that could change when Huddersfield visit Molineux today. The trends in this match strongly suggest fewer than 2.5 goals but that is reflected in the odds. The Yorkshire outfit are the lowest scorers in the league so the bet is WOLVES TO WIN TO NIL at 11/8.

Sunday racing in Ireland again delivers a lucrative meeting with almost €300,000 up for grabs at Navan while the two meetings in Britain offer a total of £144,000 in prize money. The Troytown Handicap Chase over three miles is the feature race at Navan (2.30) in which 12 of the 25 runners are trained by Gordon Elliott. His great rival for the trainer’s championship in Ireland, Willie Mullins, has only one runner. MINELLA BEAU has the form and ratings to win this race at 7/1 with William Hill.

Rick’s Sports Betting: All Roads And Jumps Courses Lead To Cheltenham – 0y Rick Elliott

Rick’s Sports Betting: All Roads And Jumps Courses Lead To Cheltenham – 0y Rick Elliott

The jumps season runs for 12 months and the final day at the end of April is immediately followed by the start of the next campaign. However, the core season runs from late October to April but the sport is dominated by four days. The Cheltenham Festival continues to grow but other races have suffered. Its importance means horses are targeted at the major races so there are fewer clashes during the rest of the season. The Grand National meeting at Aintree is now more important than in the past but Cheltenham in the March is still the meeting that matters most.

Late October sees the first fixture at the home of National Hunt racing and the first time Aintree has raced since the summer. The Betfair Chase takes place at Haydock at the end of November and there are big Saturday races over jumps from the start of November until the turn of the year. However, the championship races for hurdlers and chasers over a variety of distances are run over the four days of the Cheltenham Festival. Ante post betting is available for most races but this type of betting is fraught with danger until bookmakers offer non-runner/no bet.

The waters are muddied by the fact that horses can have more than one potential target. The expansion of the meeting to four days means there are more opportunities and options. For example, the Ryanair Chase has Grade 1 status and some horses contest it instead of the Gold Cup. There are now more lucrative races for mares which have had a detrimental affect on the Champion Hurdle. The number of Graded races has increased but the stock of horses has not kept pace. The net result is some horses appearing in the ante post markets for more than one Cheltenham race.

Willie Mullins always has horses that are viable contenders for more than one race and he tends to make late decisions. His horses owned by Rich Ricci are generally kept apart and Douvan for example has had more than one potential target in the past. If a horse prominent in the betting is withdrawn late in the day the whole ante post market is turned upside down. There is now little incentive to bet on future festival races because the backed horse could be targeted at another race. Gordon Elliott and Gigginstown Stud make multiple entries that can distort ante post betting.

The landscape becomes easier to navigate when bookmakers offer no runner/no bet for races at Cheltenham. The concession usually applies to the four championship races first but during February some bookmakers introduce the offer for every race at the festival. The concession means stakes are returned for any bets placed on horses that are withdrawn from the named race. You can back a horse safe in the knowledge that if it becomes a non-runner you get your money back. In such a competitive environment the guarantee is appearing earlier in the year which is good news for ante post punters. Final running plans are less significant once the offer applies.

Over the five months at the end of the year and start of the next year every impressive trial sees the horse touted for Cheltenham. Bookmakers and the racing Press fuel ante post interest but taking fancy prices could be false economy if you don’t get a run. It’s  best to wait until non runners become no bets in the few weeks before the Cheltenham Festival in March.

Good Saturday For Irish Trainers At Newmarket – By Ian Hudson

October 12, 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

The Dewhurst Stakes is the most prestigious race for colts and fillies aged two and the winner of the race often becomes the winter favourite for the 2,000 Guineas the following spring. Saturday’s renewal at Newmarket is one of the strongest in recent years and Too Darn Hot, the favourite, could be the next superstar from the John Gosden yard. He prepared Enable to win a second Arc after just one outing on the All-Weather this season. However, Aidan O’Brien will have his say in the Dewhurst.

The Newmarket card also features the Cesarewitch which is the second leg of the Autumn Double. The Cambridgeshire run over nine furlongs was the first race but the Cesarewitch is twice the distance. Back in the 19th century the double was a genuine target but in the modern era no horse can excel over such a range of distances. The race distance is two miles and two furlongs but its run over one circuit. The Newmarket Rowley Mile course is vast and the Cesarewitch begins in one county and ends in another. The race is a lucrative heritage handicap and a test of stamina.

Willie Mullins often targets well weighted predominantly jumps horses at staying handicaps in Britain on the Flat. Limini is his latest proven jumps horse to run in the Cesarewitch. The horse won the mares’ novices’ hurdle race at the Cheltenham Festival in 2016 which was a Grade 2 contest. If there were eight hurdles around Newmarket Limini would win by a furlong. However, it would be sacrilege to have obstacles at the home of Flat racing so there is no jumping for Limini this time. The horse could achieve the rare distinction of winning races at the homes of both National Hunt and Flat racing.

Mullins also trains Stratum who is owned by Tony Bloom, the owner and chairman of Brighton Football Club. Apparently he is one of the shrewdest sports bettors out there and he only invests in decent horses. He also owns Withhold, one of the leading contenders for the Melbourne Cup. The combination of Mullins and Bloom in a lucrative handicap in Britain could be a tip in itself but a handicap with a maximum field of 34 runners will never be easy to work out. The Dewhurst Stakes is another kettle of fish. O’Brien has won the race six times.

The leading Irish trainer often enters his best juvenile colts in the race. He has won the race in the last three years and the winner in 2016, Churchill, won the 2,000 Guineas the next year. Ryan Moore has been on O’Brien’s winners in 2015, 2016 and 2017 but at the time of writing riding plans had not been announced. At the five day declaration stage O’Brien trained eight of the 12 runners still left in the race. On ratings Anthony Van Dyck is his best chance so it will be interesting to see if Moore takes the ride or is the jockey on a stable mate.

Barring injury or illness Frankie Dettori will ride Too Darn Hot for Gosden. The partnership won the Arc last Sunday with Enable and Dettori has now won Europe’s richest Flat race six times. However, he has never won the Dewhurst but has had many rides and sometimes on leading contenders. The horse Moore decides to partner, which will probably be Anthony Van Dyck, can prevail and prevent Dettori from winning that first elusive Dewhurst Stakes. That means there will be no flying dismount at Newmarket on Saturday and Irish trainers win the two big races.

You Get Winners By Backing The ‘Winners’ – By High Roller Racing

September 18, 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

You may well think the heading for this weeks article is strange but it’s seems like horse racing is getting like the Premier League in football. There a a few stables now head and shoulders above the rest where it comes to quality. The bigger yards aren’t really worried who wins the class6 handicaps at Southwell on a freezing cold day in January… they leave those races for the rest of the trainers to squabble about. Well let me explain my points.

In my opinion in Ireland we have Aidan O’Brien, Gordon Elliot, Willie Mullins, Joseph O’Brien… these trainers are always in the winning enclosures both in their home country and abroad. In England we have Nicky Henderson,John Gosden, Mark Johnson and Richard Fahey. Worldwide we have SaidBin Suroor, Charlie Appleby, Andre Fabre and Jean Claude Rouget the latter two based in France.

My idea of winners are all the above trainers but I am prepared not to include Mark Johnson and Richard Fahey because they overall do not get the quality animals that the other guys have in huge amounts. Sorry if I offend the Johnson/Fahey fans but that’s how I personally see the situation. In USA Bob Baffert is my main man as he gets quality horses aiming for the big prizes.

My winning lists of trainers now reads

Aidan O’Brien

Gordon Elliot

Willie Mullins

Joseph O’Brien

Nicky Henderson

John Gosden

Said Bin Suroor

Charlie Appleby

Andre Fabre

Jean Claude Rouget

Bob Baffert..USA

These guys have access to the TOP JOCKEY… if a top jockey has a choice of mount then virtually every time they go for my list as they know they have a good chance of winning.

These trainers get the TOP OWNERS who have unlimited funds it seems for purchasing or breeding new stock.

Are you seeing the bigger picture? The top trainers get the top background stable staff… the top jockeys,.. the top owners… the top races are their targets and they have the WINNING habit. Everything is geared to WINNING.

As a tipster these guys are my ‘A’ Team. Majority of my selections will come from the BIG YARDS but very occasionally a tip may come from a contact elsewhere. If that arrives I will studiously look at it and take it onboard to see if the news can win. That will be the exception to the rule as we want to push the WINNING TEAM and some days there will be no bets suitable.

I hope you can see my points from this article and join in my WINNING formula.

Talking of Winners this last week High Roller has given 7 tips with SIX WINNERS and the service is producing a strike rate between 65 and 70 per cent of WINNERS.

Haggas And Newland Produce 15 Winners As Forecast – By High Roller Racing

July 24, 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

Last week we highlighted three trainers to follow… they produce masses of winners with some sparkling performances… William Haggas produced 10 winners and Dr Richard Newland 5 winners which at the time of writing could go upwards today (Sunday). This week we have three more trainers to follow so let’s deal with them one by one.

Moarco Botti has not been in very good form for a couple of months but there are signs he is now returning to form. Lady Al Thumana was a recent winner for Marco on the 11th July and she could step up again at either Nottingham or Sandown she was impressive with her turn of foot. Calla Gilda drops into claiming company for the first time at Lingfield on Wednesday and has strong claims as the form of her last run is working out well. Another from the Botti yard with a chance is Flora Tristan who should go close if taking up the entry at Lingfield. Marco has a filly named Seprani who I have been told to look for in the near future. Ignore Marco at your peril he is showing all the signs of coming back to form.

Willie Mullins has his ‘summer’ horses in splendid form and is clocking up a lot of winners. Willie likes to give the Flat Trainers something to think about and I was told he likes nothing better than getting one over on the trainers who train flat only. On Saturday Willie won a good race at Newbury on the flat with Stratum who could give these trainers another kick in the teeth very soon. Masons Daughter, Pleasure Dome and Eight And Bob who look to have chances if running in the races entered for. Keep both eyes on Willies horses both over obstacles and the flat.

Gavin Patrick Cromwell is an upcoming trainer who needs looking at. His exploits in Graded Races with Jers Girl last season for JP McManus showed his capability to get a horse right for the day. Three of Gavins horses have caught my attention and they should run close at hand. They are Aasleagh Dawn, As De Pique and Ejayteekay now these three must be backed if appearing in the next ten days. This guy will be a big trainer in the future.

So everybody spoken about… Willie Haggas, Dr Newland, Willie Mullins all seem in good form well so is High Roller Racing. This service has a 52% strike rate in July so far winning over. £2,000 for those members bracing at £100 per point. It’s like having another extra income. High Roller tips max of one horse per day… you back it… it wins you collect your winnings… you pay High Roller £10 for that winning tip. Would you like to earn like that? We don’t claim to have 40/1 or 50/1 winners we don’t do that stuff hoping to get a big winner… we give reliable selections and 52% is lower than our average. Give us a go by following the link below.

Arsenal Can Beat Atletico Tonight

For the last I don’t know how many years Arsenal fans have been baying for the blood of Arsene Wenger. The fans TV channels have got their wish but now they are seeing their long-standing manager through rose-coloured spectacles. It would be ironic if Arsenal won their first European trophy with Wenger in charge during his swansong. Arsenal are in the last four of the Europa League while bookmakers are quoting odds on their new manager. PATRICK VIERA has links with Manchester City but he would probably love to be the manager of Arsenal and he is 16/1 with bet365 to get the job and replace Wenger.

Arsenal are at home to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals this evening. The visitors are weakened by at least two significant injuries so Arsenal have a great opportunity to establish s decisive lead before the second match in Spain. Winning the Europa league is Arsenal’s only chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season and that would be a fitting legacy for Wenger. Atletico have conceded at least one goal in eight matches in England and they are missing two key defenders tonight. ARSENAL can take advantage and win the match and you can back that outcome at 13/8 with Betfair.

Willie Mullins had six winners at Punchestown yesterday and he has now edged ahead of Gordon Elliott in for the Irish Trainer’s title. Mullins also has a stronger hand today but there has been a bookmaker overreaction. The value now lies in backing Elliott at 11/2 to win the title for the first time. His team at Punchestown today is more about quantity than quality but stranger things have happened as they did on Tuesday when a jockey decided to miss out the last fence.

Mullins has the favourites in two Grade 1’s but Elliott is mob handed in the handicaps. Footpad should conform Cheltenham form with Petit Mouchoir so cannot be opposed in the novice chase at 6.40. The speculative bet of the day is FAUGHEEN in the champion stayer’s’ race at 5.30 and the horse can be backed at 8/1 with Paddy Power.

Bayern Munich Can Win Huge Champions League Match

The richest clubs in Europe generally win the Champions League. The strongest and wealthiest domestic leagues are usually represented in the latter stages of the competition. The four semi-finalists come from the four richest leagues in Europe. Global brands from England, Italy, Spain and Germany are in the last four. Liverpool beat Roma 5-2 last night but the score could have been anything. In the last round Roma knocked out Barcelona after overturning a three goal deficit after the first leg but Liverpool are a different kettle of fish and can score at least once in the second match. LIVERPOOL are 6/4 with William Hill to win the Champions League.

Tonight’s first leg in the second semi-final brings together two of the Hollywood clubs of European football. Bayern Munich have been the champions of Europe five times and Real Madrid have won the European Cup or Champions League on 12 occasions. The clubs are ranked third and first in the list of winners of the European Cup or Champions League and they are two of the superpowers of the world game.

Real Madrid have prevented the opposition scoring in just four of their last 24 matches in all competitions. This meeting is the most common fixture in the history of European competition and out of 25 matches both clubs have won 11 times. Real Madrid won the last tie at the Champions League quarter-final stage last season. BAYERN MUNICH can edge ahead and are the bet to win tonight’s match at 19/20 with Ladbrokes.

In racing it’s the second day of the Punchestown Festival and the subplot of the Irish trainer’s championship. Willie Mullins edged closer to Gordon Elliott yesterday but still faces a deficit of over €400,000 and there is plenty of prize money on offer today. The richest race on the card is the Punchestown Gold Cup (5.30) in which Mullins has four runners. DJAKADAM has never quite got the job done in the Cheltenham version but the horse has the ranking and form to prevail today and that outcome is 7/1 with Coral. If he does win the race for Mullins its game on for the trainer’s title.

Roma Can Avoid Defeat At Anfield Tonight

Liverpool are unbeaten in European football in 15 home matches and the atmosphere at Anfield is certainly a factor. The fans went too far in welcoming the Manchester City team bus in the last round and crossed the line between banter and intimidation. A football club has its culture and identity and the passion of home fans is a massive factor in the Champions League. City could not cope in the first half in the quarter-finals and the tie was over after 45 minutes. Roma are another kettle of fish and are used to hostile environments so can secure a DRAW at 7/2 with William Hill.

In the European Cup era the away team would set their stall out not to concede and were happy with a goalless draw. However, it is now uncommon for a team who do not score an away in the first leg to proceed to the next round. Not scoring in the first match on the road leaves a team vulnerable to an away goal which then makes life very difficult. The current Roma generation understand the value of an away goal. Roma have scored in all 10 away matches this year and that run can continue at Anfield tonight. The logical conclusion is to back BTTS at 8/11 with Ladbrokes.

It’s the first day of the Punchestown Festival which is Ireland’s version of Cheltenham. However, whereas Irish horses are entered en masse at Cheltenham there are few UK runners at Punchestown this week. The money and talent has migrated to Ireland and it takes an exceptional horse to beat them in their own back yard. Irish racing has now become a duopoly with Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott dominating the scene. Mullins is well off the pace in the trainer’s championship and must win the Grade 1 Champion Chase today (5.30). He has three runners and the best is DOUVAN who should be backed at Evens with Betfair.

There are two other Grade 1 contests on the first of five fixtures at Punchestown this week. The opening contest is at 3.40 and this could be described as a twilight meeting that has the best of both worlds. The racing starts at a reasonable time and doesn’t impinge on the evening and the concept works for the track. Seven of the 10 runners in the Champion Novice Hurdle (4.20) are trained by Mullins and Elliott. The former can cut into Elliott’s lead with GETABIRD winning at Evens with bet365.

Saturday’s Racing Preview – By Ian Hudson

Malaya Could Win At Kempton En Route To Cheltenham

Kempton’s jumps fixture on Saturday stages the last major prep races for the Cheltenham Festival and there are some potential runners at the meeting that matters most in action. The Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle often produces a decent winner and this year Mont Des Avaliors has the potential to be a player in one of the novices’ hurdle races at the Festival. Malaya is a decent juvenile who could figure in the Triumph Hurdle given a good run at Kempton.

The best hurdlers, chasers, runners over the cross country course and bumper horses will all be primed to be at their peak in just over two weeks. The Cheltenham Festival dominates the sport like no other event in other sports. It is one of the few occasions in the jumps season when the best horses race against each other. The Aintree Grand National meeting produces great races but Cheltenham in March is the pinnacle. It’s known as the Olympics of National Hunt racing and it’s about the best of the best.

Nicky Henderson has the favourites for the three most prestigious races and no trainer has won all three in the same year. He is the leading trainer at the meeting and looks certain to add to his tally this year. Buveur D’Air (Champion Hurdle), Altior (Champion Chase) and Might Bite (Gold Cup) are his market leaders and the treble pays over 12/1. The first two horses are bankers and Might Bite is the best chaser in training in Britain and Ireland.

There is often wind and rain at the Festival and it can be quite cold. However, the temperatures are set to be below average over the next two weeks. In that context it’s difficult to predict ground conditions but there should be an element of soft. Henderson’s best horses are so good that they are not ground dependent but Might Bite is proven in dry spring conditions. Any surface will not inconvenience Buveur D’Air and Altior and the unique treble is on.

If all three win Henderson must be in with a shout for the leading trainer award. Gordon Elliott won it last year after sending out six winners at the Festival. Willie Mullins produced the same number but Elliott took the title because more of his horses finished second. Samcro is Elliott’s banker but he could have about 40 runners over the four days of the meeting. Mullins will bring a strong team but Henderson could outscore the Irish trainers.

Paul Nicholls does not have many superstars but Politologue has a great chance in the Champion Chase. Malaya could get in the picture for the Triumph Hurdle but the acid test is the juvenile race at Kempton. The Betdaq Handicap Chase on the same card is more a Grand National trial but the race could throw up a live contender for a similar race at the Festival. The Kempton card is decent and stands alone as valuable. Backing winners is important but the funds will then form part of the Festival betting bank.
