Betting in-play is increasingly popular with the advent of the betting exchanges and even the traditional bookmakers are trying to get in on the act.
Certain sports lend themselves to this type of betting, where you take a position on an outcome and then green-up if possible.
The best events to bet in are those that take place over a period of time; tennis, football, golf etc. Sports such as horse racing are usually over too soon to accurately predict an outcome although betting bots can help in this respect.
BBC Sport commentary online is an ideal way to gain up to the minute information on the unfolding drama of a sporting event and help you make the right betting decisions. The BBC is renowned for fairness and impartiality unlike some sports organisations such as the Racing Post which may have vested interests. The commentators are usually experts in their field and will offer pertinent and useful information.
Let us take for example the French Open 2013 tennis match between Serena Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova where Serena is a short priced favourite.
Firstly we are informed by BBC Sport that Serena has failed to win her last four quarter-final appearances at Roland Garros, including a loss to today’s opponent, Kuznetsova in 2009.
The first set is won by Serena 6-1 and the match appears to be going her way.
However in the second set Svetlana fights back and comments such as “Williams’s forehand is malfunctioning and Kuznetsova merely has to watch the American self-destruct to collect another break point…” suggest the match could be moving the other way and the Russian goes on to win the set 3-6.
Apart from the official commentary the public are able to add their views through the ‘Get Involved’ facility (Send us an SMS 81111 Twitter: Tweet us at #bbctennis Facebook: Facebook) – for example: “Could an unseeded player really beat world number 1 to reach the Semi finals!? It’s certainly looking like it”
At this point the odds for Kuznetsova winning the match are now down to 8.54 with Williams around 2.0 and it should be possible to green-up on your original bet.
Here is an example: I place a £10 bet on Kuznetsova at 25.0 before the match. After winning the 2nd set she is trading at 8.54 and I decide to ‘green-up’ i.e. take a profit whatever the outcome of the match by placing a lay sports bet on the Kuznetsova.
To calculate what stake I should use I need to multiply my initial stake times my initial back odds (£10 x 25.0 = £250)
I divide that by the lay price of 8.54 to give the lay stake – £250/8.54 = £29.27
If Kuznetsova wins I gain £250 less £10 stake = £240 less 5% commission = £228. If Kuznetsova wins the match I lose the lay part of the bet 29.27 x 8.54 = £250 less stake of £29.27 = £220.73 giving the profit £228 – £220.73 = £7.27 Profit
If Kuznetsova loses the match my profit is my lay stake of £29.27 less 5% commission = £27.81 less back stake £10 = £17.81 Profit
Normal play was eventually resumed with Serena Williams taking the last set 6-3 to win the match.
