Andy Bells Racing Diary

February 14, 2015 By admin Leave a Comment

A Steady Week.

Saturday 7th. We have some really good racing today and a few Cheltenham pointers hopefully, not least CONEYGREE who is trading at 7/2 and with his last run only being 3 seconds slower than SILVIANO CONTIs on the same card he looks a must bet and is my first email out of the day.

I get a very good word for FORTUNATE GEORGE in what looks the best and also the trickiest bumper of the season so far, I suggest an ew bet at 6/1 and also an ew double with CONEYGREE.

I’m not away racing today as you know I’m not the greatest fan of Saturday racing, well from a punting perspective anyway, as a norm it’s far too tricky, although saying that sometimes you do get a standout bet as I think CONEYGREE is today.

Just before racing starts I get a call from a contact who is normally very shrewd and selective with his information and they are often out of the ballpark prices and today’s is no exception. LIGHTENTERTAINMENT who is running at Newbury off bottom weight and is trading at 22/1, I decide just to back him very small ew and advise my clients to do likewise.

You have all probably heard the words or letters McCoy or AP enough at time of reading, but what a real bombshell and a shock to the system his retirement was. It’s all been said by now and rightly so as we will never see another jockey of his dedication or ability in our life times and most likely ever.

On a lighter note I bet good old Dicky’s heart (Richard Johnson) did a few somersaults and missed a beat or two as he has been runner up to the great man an amazing 16 times, come on Dicky keep injury free and lift that title you fully deserve it.

I did say in the paragraph previous that sometimes you get a great bet on a Saturday and I think one has just popped up and that is SIR AP in the next honours list, maybe Barry Gerathy to ride for JP and Dicky as champ next year, easy old game this a nice treble.

How good was CONEYGREE and that certainly puts him firmly in the Gold Cup picture and looks a decent ew bet to me.

I did say in my email that the bumper looked extremely strong and it proved just that for our selection FORTUNATE GEORGE who fell away quite tamely, which was a shame as we had a nice ew double going onto him as well.

Our LATE selection LIGHTENTERTAINMENT was badly impeded by a faller but in all honestly he would of struggled to place although he was running on though beaten horses at the death.

Sunday 8th. We have an invite to my fathers for tea tonight, with the promise of an  excellent Chinese delivered and a few bottles of vino, so that’s later sorted, now it’s up to me to sort the important early doors stuff.

First up, oh yes after my Sunday morning confessions of course, we have been waiting for the Hunter Chase season to kick in and today it really starts for us with a couple of huge months ahead. No rocket science to kick off with as we think PRINCE DE BEAUCHENE is a good thing and at 5/4 I have no hesitation in getting all my punters to back him for me personally and also putting him out on my ODDS2 service, to a very select few. Also in the same email I advise my ANDY BELLs clients to have the minimum ew bet on CURRENT EXCHANGE in the same race who is trading at a far to big price of 22/1.

To finish my day off I also advise backing UGOLIN DE BEAUMONT ew at 20/1.

With all my emails sent I am going to have a look at the Cheltenham Gold cup with a view to seeing whether we should reinvest our winnings from yesterday on CONEYGREE.

Just as we are ready to leave the call I have been waiting for comes through regarding the inquiries I made this morning concerning APACHE STRONGHOLD in Ireland. It’s all very positive and with such a strong favourite I decide to back him ew at 9/2 and advise the LATE SERVICE to do likewise.

I arrive at my fathers just in time to see our first runner and two out as UGOLIN DE BEAUMONT looks like winning and our 20/1 steel this morning is now slight odds on in running on the machine, unfortunately he is out jumped at the last and finishes a clear second, I’m obviously disappointed but a nice start to the day and a decent profit.

APACHE STRONGHOLD is given a perfect ride and takes it up at the last and just holds the favourite to give us a really nice winner at 9/2 and gives the LATE SERVICE a really nice winning day as it’s their only bet.

Hunter chaser time and we have had a maximum bet on PRINCE DE BEAUMONT and a small ew on CURRENT EXCHANGE at 22/1.

We know that PRINCE DE BEAUMONT will set a strong pace as his forte is staying, which he does, unfortunately CURRENT EXCHANGE our 22/1 ew bet departs five from home when still going well. PRINCE DE BEAUMONT jumps the last very well and wins with a length in hand. A good winning day for both my services again, although I can’t help just wondering what would of happened if CURRENT EXCHANGE had not fell because he beat the third by 10 lengths last time, Mmmmmm.

Monday 9th. Last nights Chinese was spot on as usual and complimented a good days work yesterday with both my services winning.

I find out early this morning that JACK THE LEGEND from the very shrewd Brian Ellison stable is very well fancied and is going to be bet. I advise my clients to snap up the 7/1 ew which is on offer now as it won’t be there come race time. Also I think it’s very interesting that ROBERTO PEGASUS’s hurdle rating is far superior to his fencing and at 3/1 I also advise a win bet. Lastly the maiden SADMA who is 5/1 and I advise backing him ew and suggest entering him in an ew double with ROBERTO PEGASUS.

First phone call I get which is not horsey, horsey and it’s Paul trying to entice me out for a beer, I do manage to refrain as I have a lot to do, but only for today and we agree to meet tomorrow.

JACK THE LEGENT goes off at a very well punted 9/2f as I suggested he would, during the race as last time he gets slightly outpaced and ultimately needs every inch of this extended three miles and he only gets on top in the last half a furlong. A brilliant start to out day with a 7/1 winner. ROBERTO PEGASUS also just gets up on the line with another inspired ride by Wayne Hutchinson for Alan King and sets up with a very nice winning day and also a possible ew double if SADMA can break his maiden. I don’t like blaming apprentices because when you place your bet you take your chance, but the way SADMA and the rag went off and faded badly one can only presume that they got there fractions wrong and in the process scuppered our very nice ew double. At least we had already bagged a couple of winners 7/1 and 3/1 to endure another winning day.

Tuesday 10th. PLUS JAMAIS is from last years winning stable and is expected to repeat the feat today, he is trading at 7/4, which looks fair to me so I email him out. Also I add COURT FRONTIER who is running across the water at Clonmel in their Hunter Chase, he is a very short price at 15/8 but if his last two runs are anything to go by he wins and wins easily.

After our excellent piece of information yesterday that resulted in a 7/1 winner from the Brian Ellison stable I have no hesitation going with the same source today and emailing out TWO MOONS on the LATE SERVICE and insisting the 5/1 is taken and quickly. Before my emails have hardly landed he’s 9/2 than 4/1 and within 30 minutes he’s 7/2, 3/1 and finally settles at 5/2 and shock horror he is quickly deemed a non runner, I just wonder whether the price was missed in house.

It’s my only free day of the week and I have arranged to go into town and relax over a few beers, let’s hope Miss Marks and Spencer locks the Thomas Crapper door today and doesn’t do her airing in public. As we order our first pints I do giggle as on the Thomas door a new A4 sign has been freshly printed “Strictly Disabled Only.”

Just as we settle down with the iPad on RUK I get a text telling me that CROCKET is a good ew bet at 4/1 to nothing and if he has sorted his jumping out he will go very close, as Mr Ellison has packed his TWO MOONS back into the horse box and on his way home I relay this information to the LATE SERVICE clients.

We have drawn a crowd as we normally do which are all looking to win some free beer tokens from across the road at Joe Corals. As we are all already on COURT FRONTIER we freely give him out to all the hungry wanna be punters, who than trail across the road like ants.

We can now enjoy the Guinness as we no longer have a table full as they have all got what they came for and dispersed back into the far corners of Weatherspoon’s.

Thank goodness we didn’t give out PLUS JAMAIS who runs like a drain and the only prize he is taking home is the wooden spoon.

The ant trail has started and Weatherspoon’s is slowly emptying into Joe’s across the road, we arrive to a full shop. A deadly hush descends as COURT FRONTIER is playing up at the start and trails by over twenty lengths, the stares in my direction tells a story as dole day for some is another week away, the more die hards can’t hide their frustrations any longer as no attempt is made to catch up and we are stone last and looking totally uninterested. OMG Three out we have passed our first horse two out a air of anticipation descends as we are flying into fifth at the last we jump into second and the leader is ten in front and dead on his feet oi oi oi oi, f##k sake we lose by a fast dismissing 1/2 a length and lead two over the line. We have all done our monies but at least I have escaped a public flogging for now.
To lose like that I am gutted and it kills my day so I quickly get a taxi home to sulk.

Wednesday 11th. Both my services suffered a rare losing day yesterday the LATE very small and ANDY BELL an unplaced and a very unfortunate second. Never mind we are still well in profit and I have some good stuff to recoup today. I am heading to Lingfield, but before I leave I have a maximum bet to advise at Kempton tonight, ITTAKESFOREVER is on the three timer and I have been told he will complete it as well, it’s going to be kept simple he is going to be jumped out and lead all the way, well that’s the plan anyway and I advise taking the 11/10.

I get stuck on the dreaded M25 so the rest of my information is later than ideal going out. I am going to back UGANDA GLORY ew here in the 2miler and also DRESDEN ew at 7/2 down at Chepstow.

Lingfield is surprisingly busy and it’s nice to catch up with my old trainer John Best and I think there could be some mileage in getting another one in training with him.

Oliver Sherwood has made the journey across to Chepstow today in an attempt to get his 1000th winner and he is attempting it with FINANCIAL CLIMATE and I’m told he is very hopeful. FINANCIAL CLIMATE is trading at 7/2 so I advise the LATE service clients to have a big ew bet as I have with Tom and Keith.

UGANDA GLORY looks very well in the paddock with his huge cheek pieces nearly touching the paddock ring rail. I am very surprised to see him drifting on course but that is sometimes due to the monies being down early and the on course bookmakers wanting to get it in their books. As all good ew bets he finishes fourth not the perfect start with the M25 beckoning later. As DRESDEN jumps the last I think we are going to win only to get nutted bang on the line, so a small ew loss. We now only have tonight’s runner IFITTAKESFOREVER to turn our day round.

It’s a different cup of tea for the LATE SERVICE as Oliver Sherwood gets his 1000th winner and in doing so he secures our only bet of the day is a 7/2 winner ensuring a very nice profit.

Thankfully the journey home is better than the one here and I make it home in time to see IFITTAKESFOREVER bolt out of the stalls, as expected and wins by eight lengths going away, which in turn changes our day into a winning one. Once again a good days work completed with both my services being winning ones.

Thursday 12th. I’m catching the 10-07 to Leicester this morning to catch up with my very good friend and contact Steve and than onto Leicester races and hopefully back the winner of the Hunter Chase which is the penultimate race of the day.

Whilst on the rattler I email out a win bet on THE OULD LAD who was a very good second in a hot Cheltenham handicap last time and well clear of the third, having won his previous two races. Also I email out two against the field in the 4-00 at Kelso FLYING EAGLE ew at 9/2 and TANTAMOUNT ew at 12/1 and to finish our day off it’s the Will Biddick ridden SIR DU BEARN in the Kelso Hunter Chase in hope that he let’s him bowl along and not hang on to him for a cosy win.

I arrive at Leicester only to find out that our Hunter Chase bet isn’t happening as we had been lead to believe that WOODVIEW PRINCE was not going to make the journey down and he has and the stable think he is a good thing, we have our reservations so hold fire on what was going to be our bet for another day.

The owners and trainers is virtually empty which is always good as I can nick the table near the power sockets, Steve gets in a couple of pints of Guinness, just as I am emailing out our first bet to my LATE SERVICE clients at Kelso. Jason Maguire takes the ride on the quickly improving THE LAST SAMURI who is trading at 5/2 having won his last two races.

I very quickly bump into (I dare not say) somebody very close indeed to CLOUD CREEPER, who thinks in no uncertain terms that he will go very close under Dickies only ride of the day here, so I make him my final bet of the day and advise the LATE SERVICE to take the 2/1.

The Leicester hill strikes again to our detriment today as THE OULD LAD jumps the last in front and amazingly fades away very tamely into third, amazingly I say, as the Cheltenham race was three furlongs further.

Not the perfect start for my ANDY BELLs clients and it doesn’t get any better for the LATE SERVICE as Jason Maguire is just about to come and take up the running to win his race on THE LAST SAMURI he falls two out.

You can’t keep a good firm down for long as Dickie rides a lovely race on CLOUD CREEPER and earns his sole riding fee and wins cheekily at a good sp of 9/4.

Although we can’t get the winner in the 4-00 at Kelso we do the next best as TANTAMOUNT finishes second at 12/1 and gets us a nice ew profit in doing so.

SIR DE BEARN does lead as we expected, what we didn’t expect was poor jumping as in his points he pings the fences as he did last time he won, so our fate is soon sealed as he badly disappoints.

Friday 13th. Oh dear Friday the 13th and most gamblers are superstitious, what do I do??

I am going to get soaked at Fakenham today as rain is forecast in our area. I am very sceptical AGAIN regarding the going reports, I just can’t believe that there is going to be any good in the Sandown going I just hope it’s no worse than soft as heavy will not assist our selections at all and the clerk can’t surely be that far out can he??

So in the 2-00 ON TREND ew 12/1 who will relish the conditions if no worse than soft and the same applies to FORT GEORGE ew 6/1 in the Artillery Gold Cup are my only selections to my ANDY BELLs clients.

Just before I leave I am told that LIGHT WAVE  at 6/4 is flying at home and has hopefully progressed past the early morning favourite who is quite exposed.

Sorry to cut this weeks short but it will happen more often now the days are pulling out, as I am now leaving for Fakenham so will have to send this weeks diary in now.

Back next Saturday.
