Andy Bell’s Racing Diary

Getting Rid of the Rotten Luck NOW!!

Saturday 21st. Yesterday was a if and only day, we had a good word on WIZARDS BRIDGE ew at 10/1, which halved in price and was typical of all good ew bets and came fourth.

FAB LOLLY missed the break and the jockey wasn’t hard on her afterwards. It was all than left to AP to turn our day round and into a winning one and he did with a typically power packed ride on MASTER MALT who got up in the final furlong.

The LATE SERVICE were very unlucky not to have a winning Friday as we had taken 3/1 on the very well backed SYMPHONY OF KINGS who was backed into 2/1 favourite and lead everywhere apart from bang on the line and was beaten a head into second.

Early Saturday morning and I already have my selections sorted for my ANDY BELLs clients VAGO COLLONGES 11/8 and another National flat runner BRAIN POWER 9/2 and I’m hoping he is as good as our last weeks very easy and impressive 13/2 winner.

As I’m not away racing today I have arranged for an afternoon in town with the lads.

With just two more pieces of information to email out I decide to put them out on my LATE SERVICE. Steve has told me that BELTOR is really well fancied and if he races today as he has been galloping at home all road lead to Cheltenham so I advise taking the 7/2 on show. George Margeson has his filly SHYRON running mid afternoon in the big sprint and the owner has been offered 250k if she wins, so she is obviously well primed for the race so I also advise a win bet at 3/1.

With all my work complete for the day I rock up at the Swan at 12ish only to find out the draft Guinness is no more tinned only, bang goes our pre-Cheltenham bash unless we can stomach eight or nine tinnies, each if I wanted to do that I would at a millionth of the price at home and would even fire up the BBQ. We hadn’t planned on Weatherspoon’s today but needs must, so it’s taxi time.

No taxis and I’m not prepared to travel the eight miles on a bus which stops at every out post in Norfolk and takes over an hour, so it’s three of us in Gitty’s flower van and Paul Cabbage draws the back lol.  On arrival Paul looks as green as the flower vans foliage and is defiantly in need of a pint. The local wineos have been at the black nectar so thankfully it’s not first out of the pipe. As normal the normal crew gathers around our table for their Saturday bet fix, I offer them BELTOR and SHYRON and advise them as they are there not to double them, bet BELTOR first take your stake out and than bet SHYRON with the profit, in the perfect world.

DAYS OF THUNDER soils the start of the day again as he did last time as he looks beaten when fluffing two out, but still has enough class and speed to beat our VAGO COLLONGES. I think when DAYS OF THUNDERs head is properly sorted he is going to be a serious tool.

BELTOR is most defiantly Cheltenham bound with a serious display as he pulls to hard for most of the race and wins going away by eight lengths. All off a sudden we have a huddle around the table and six pints of Guinness lined up on the table and Bellie Boy is a star.

Just as the last gratis pint has been consumed for some unknown reason SHYRON misses the break and trails round last. That’s not her running I will find out what went tits up, don’t give up on her.

No freebies on this return journey and a few mumblings, but in this game as Andy Wardel said everyone can be famous for two minutes.

We soon get over the disappointment as my more loyal supporters and patrons who are still speaking to me are given my last selection BRAIN POWER in the National Hunt Flat race. Oi Oi how easy was that gosh I wish they could all just bowl along and kick on and win like BRIAN POWER did, which in doing so gave my ANDY BELLs clients a good winning day, my pride intact, the Guinness table full again and the beginnings of a cracking day.

Sunday 22nd. It wasn’t only a good day we drunk into the evening far to long and it wasn’t until the local taxi firms boss came in and had a word in our shell likes that if we told his drivers anymore just one more we would be off their radars for the night, so like naughty little boys we drank up and headed home.

I am glad that Mr Moody taxi man cut our night short as I feel ok this morning and rearing to go.

SPOOKYDOOKEY has refound his form since the John Jo stable has started firing again and today looks like a super chance for his to make it two on the trot, although he is a shortish price I advise backing him at 11/8 and suggest taking the price. Also GILZEAN at 9/4 is expected to go very close so I email both out and also put them in an ew double. I know you’re moaning an ew double at 11/8 and 9/4, but a win and a place is a profit.

Oh dear my Sunday morning runny scrambled eggs all of a sudden seemed a tad sour as obviously The Dirty Don and his significant other are and what short memories they have as in the Dons column this morning proves. Maybe the Don forgot to mention to his dearly belovered Penny, credit to her tho for backing her “old” man, that he didn’t get many corners in our rematch in the Epsom Derby Challenge in June, when I didn’t only win both days I beat him like a bad dog. Let me remind you both;

Day 1…

The Don (-24 1/2) points
Bellie Boy +15 1/2 points

Day 2…

The Don (-5) points
Bellie Boy +38 1/2 points

My calculations make that The Don (-29 1/2) points and Bellie + 54 points = a 83 1/2 point bashing by Bellie boy. Where was your 25/1 fluke there Don and I don’t think you even won the corners in that match as without your fluke at Cheltenham you wouldn’t of last year either lol lol. pick the bones out of that.

SPOOKYDOOKEY runs all over the track but wins as we expected very easily and sets us up for a nice winning day.

GILZEAN is backed from 9/4 into 7/4 but never looked like winning and was fortunate to nick us a place. Although we lost on GILZEANS single bets we made a profit on SPOOKYDOOKEY and a small profit on our ew double, see its not madness and a winning day.

Monday 23rd. Todays bets on ANDY BELLs service are SIROP DE MENTRE at 9/4 who can make amends for poor Lucy’s cockup yesterday, when she thought she had another circuit and just cantered over the line full of running in second. Also I like the chances of HELLIUM ew at 13\2 and finally a win bet on NO DEAL at 3/1who looks on a very workable mark of 110 for the Lucinda Russell and Peter Buchanan combination in the lucky last a Ayr.

With the Cheltenham festival looming I am going to get an afternoons work in on the cards as I am really hyped up already and we still have 15 days until the big and unforgettable first race roar.

Smiley rides the unreliable YOUNG CHEDDAR as he has the ground and weights in his favour and if he is ever to go close its got to be today and at 8/1 I decide on a personal ew bet at 8/1 and also advise the LATE SERVICE to do likewise.

Its not been Lucy’s or SIROP DE MENTHE last couple of days as he is beaten into second and he is beaten by RATHEALY who was beaten 85 lengths last time and was ninth of ten, well that’s the fun of horse racing.

Our luck doesn’t change for the better as the habitual one runner is pulled out of our eight horse racing leaving seven runners and two places and you know the script already HELIUM finishes third at 6/1.

Our LATE SERVICE bettors get a buz as Smiley gets a tune out of YOUNG CHEDDAR and turning for home looks the most likely winner, unfortunately he runs out of puff after the last, YOUNG CHEDDAR not Smiley and finishes second which gives us a small profit. It certainly was the lucky last and we needed it as NO DEAL jumps like a stag and wins very nicely and wins going away and gives ANDY BELL’s clients a nice profit on the day.

Tuesday 24th. I am traveling up to Leicester today as we have two hunter chasers and I want to touch base with a few contacts from that sphere.

My first bet is the very well placed NEFYN BAY who has the very able services of Bridget Andrews in this lady’s race at 6/4. I also get a very good word for THE ALAMO from the John Quinn stable who has apparently been working very well at home and is expected to run a big race at 3/1 do I advise my ANDY BELLs clients a win on each and an ew double as I have done myself.

Also I advise on the same email I want to hold fire on my Hunter chase bet until I arrive at the course and check something out.
The only downside is AGAIN there is no fish bar, no wonder the crowd is sparse.

I haven’t been at the course for long and I have our Hunter Chase bet confirmed and in no uncertain terms I am told they think he’s a good thing, its WOODVIEW PRINCE in the second Hunter of the day.

It’s a non alcohol day for me as I hopefully have two meetings with separate contacts and I don’t want to make any promises that I may not to be able to keep or fulfill, so in these situations it’s always wise to keep a clear head, which is a pain as I have the train home, tough life isn’t it.

It’s always great to start the day with a winner which also sets us up for a nice double later as well, with full marks to NEFYN BAY who won very well and Bridget Andrews as they were nearly brought down by the fall of VOLCANIC JACK, as I said in my earlier email Bridget is the best on show in this race and proved it here, although NEFYN BAY was placed very well by the stable as he was able to run without his penalty for winning last time at Wetherby.

Our only bet of the day for the LATE SERVICE was next at Catterick and I was well against the early morning favourite VENUE who was 11/8 with SIR SAFIR at 7/2 and GRAND MEISTER at 6/1. For most of the race our two were challenging VENUE who went off at an amazing price of 5/1 and luckily for us SIR SAFIR gave us a good 7/2 winner with GRAND MEISTER just missing a place in fourth. So another nice winning day for the LATE SERVICE.

Next it’s the second leg of our ew double THE ALAMO who has been smashed up in the betting from 9/2 into 5/2. Unfortunately his jumping let him and us down and he just got caught on the line and missed out on third finishing another very annoying fourth.

Our day now is dependent on our maximum bet on WOODVIEW PRINCE in the second Hunter Chase at Leicester. In all honesty apart from a slight stumble on landing four out there was never a moments doubt and this lightly raced 10 year old wins by a distance. I keep saying anybody that wants to make money this time of year our Hunter Chase information is second to none.
A good days work again with both my services winning.

Wednesday 25th. I was straight out after the Hunter Chaser race last night and thankfully just managed to catch the 4-55 rattler home. Today is panning out as if it’s going to be a busy one and I start with my ANDY BELLs email and clients. The Paul Nichols trained ATLANTIC ROLLER should of won last time but for unseating at the last is our first win bet. Next it’s the good ex flat stayer SPICE FAIR who blew his chances by pulling all though the race last time. He is better than that so we punt him at ew at 4/1 and also an ew double on the pair. Lastly I want to take on the odds on favourite in the Hunter Chase with SWEET MY LORD at 3/1 but only for very small stakes.

With the information still coming in I email the LATE SERVICE an ew bet on CITY SUPREME at 4/1 and finish with RASCAL at 9/4 ridden by Bridget Andrews who rode a winner for us yesterday and finish with an ew double.

ITS OFFICIAL; THE EMAILS AND MESSAGES ARE OUT FROM BETFAN TOWERS, THIS YEARS CHELTENHAM CHALLENGE IS ON, TO SEE WHO REALLY IS THE COTSWOLD KING as its BELLIE BOY v THE DIRTY DON II.

Our first runner of the day is for my LATE SERVICE clients in the second at Wincanton CITY SUPREME at 4/1 ew, who turning for home is trading at odds on in running and is booked for a certain place as the pair are 20 clear until Rachel loses her stirrups at the last and I’m gutted as we get picked up on line line and finishes third, wrecking our ew bet and our ew double.

Next up is our first runner on ANDY BELLs service ATLANTIC ROLLER who unseated at the last fence last time and let’s hope we have a change of luck after an unfortunate start to our day.

ATLANTIC roller looks the winner turning for home but is ran out of it by Colin Tizzards charge and finishes second.

SPICE FAIR ew 4/1 next and it’s looking as if it’s not going to be our day. A truer word never said as we have the race at our mercy as we have gone two clear coming to the last and AGAIN fluffs it and with that goes our 4/1 winner, he does stay on and gets us a place.

What a brilliant ride by Bridget on board RASCAL getting her fractions perfect and just about leading all the way and winning going away in the end giving us a 9/4 winner on the eventual 11/8 favourite for my LATE SERVICE clients. Pity about CITY SUPREMES messing up the last as it ruined our ew bet and also our ew double.

Our day now depends on beating the odds on 4/7 favourite BIG FELLA THANKS with our 3/1 shot SWEET MY LORD in the Hunter Chase. BIG FELLA THANKS drifts alarmingly in the betting to odds against at one point, but that doesn’t stop him winning very easily and in the process we have to endure our first losing day in the last five.

Thursday 26th. Although we on ANDY BELLs service had a annoying losing day yesterday with two seconds and a third, we are still 57 points up on the month and hitting an exceptional 41% strike rate. Also the LATE CALL services are creeping up the table with 54 points profit as well this month and a not too shabby 44% strike rate.

I have just watched our races from yesterday and I still find it hard to believe that we had a losing day, rotten luck wasn’t it?

Lets hope we can have a change of luck and a strong start to the day with a short priced favourite LORD NAVITIS who is trading at 6/5, also not ideal but I really fancy another short priced favourite ALTERNATIF at 5/4 for the Pipe, Scudamore team. I email both these out to my ANDY BELLs clients and also suggest an ew double. Finally at 11/4 I add UNTIL WINNING  in an ew trixie to complete our day.

I am told that the old rogue ALFIE SPINNER is going to be punted today and so is VIVANT POEME later, this time I email out the LATE SERVICE and suggest taking the prices which are 5/1 and 6/1.

After I have done my good deed for the day and visited Mr Jolly, who is still very ill and I can’t convince him to join me at Fakenham on Monday, proving how frail he still is. He does still have all his marbles thankfully and tells me a story about when he was at Norwich cattle market about forty years ago when this really fat lady wanted to buy one of his calves and he jokingly said if you join me for the weekend, its yours, when she drew even closer and asked him where she had to be, his arse dropped out of the deal and he had to lie and say it wasn’t really his and had to buy it in.

I spoke to Simon Holden today and told him the house in Cheltenham is booked, we are meeting at Birmingham East station on Monday the 9th and settle in for a hard weeks work and if we can hit the winners a hard weeks play which will most certainly be in that order. I have four bets already sorted for the festival, there’s no point giving them out now as the prices won’t shorten a great deal now and the Dirty Don may copy me when he reads my column.

Thankfully LORD NAVITS gets us off to a winning start with a nice cosy victory as he lead all the way under a very accomplished ride from the young 7lb claimer  Jake Hodson and was very well backed in the process into odds on. ALTERNATIF definitely bumped into one today in the shape of  DRAGONS DEN who bolted up to the apparent surprise of his trainer Chris Down who wanted to pull him out because of the ground but the owner insisted on running. Pity Chris Down didn’t stamp his authority as we would of had two winners and a very nice double.

UNTIL WINNING is never at the races I can’t blame the ground as I think he likes soft, as I’ve said before these animals are not machines and maybe he had a headache, who knows. We made small profit on our ew double and a small loss on our ew treble.

ALFIE SPINNER who the LATE SERVICE clients had backed ew at 5/1 from the very shrewd Nick Williams stable was always going very well and Lizzie Kelly didn’t seem to mind him getting pushed back in the field and was very gentle on him all the way, I think there may be another day in mind for him, pop ALFIE SPINNER in your notebooks.

Our final bet of the day was VIVANT POEME ew at 6/1 also for the LATE SERVICE and how far would he of won by had he not been cut up turning into the final two hurdles, although AP made sure we did get our place money. Things are not quite dropping for us at the moment, which is annoying as we are having a very successful month and with a few things going our way it would be even better, but lets not be greedy hey?

Friday 27th. I am traveling up to Doncaster this morning for today’s racing hence I have already sent out two selections last night SEBASTIAN BEACH in the first at Newbury and also NEFYN BAY in the first at Doncaster.

After the first race what a joke the going is again “good to soft” absolutely no way, 28 seconds under standard, they were dead on their feet the conditions are very testing, “these clerks of the courses.” SEBASTIAN BEACH never travels a yard and we will see a different horse on a better surface, sorry an awful start to the day. My second bet NEFYN BAY runs no better than our first and this time I have no excuses for his poor showing, I’m not going to put it down to the extra 7lb because that was negated by the apprentice I can only put it down to two quick runs.

I arrive at Doncaster just after mid day and I am in the press room within 15 minutes, no traffic, no queues for taxis and straight into the course. I have two more to put on my LATE SERVICE email and Nico rides the first HUNTERS HOOF at 5/6 here at Doncaster and also later on CRAZY JACK at 15/8 and the also suggest the double.

I hope it’s livelier out in town tonight than it is here today as it’s virtually empty and it’s the last days jumping card here tomorrow, so only about a four week wait until the Lincoln.

Even with wretched luck for the last few days I’m still more than happy with our weeks work as both my services should be finishing it with about 50 points profit each.

I’m staying out in Doncaster tonight so hopefully we can all have a giggle in my column next week.

With my luck the last few days I feel that if I fell in a barrel of tits I would come out sucking my thumb.

Be good and Join me for Cheltenham and lets win shit loads together again.

Back next Saturday.
