Simon Holden Racing Club

What a bleak week on the weather front and the racing has been on bad ground.

Many of you agreed with my views regarding the proposed closure of Kempton which was nice to hear. It shows people actually care about the heritage of our great sport.

Greyhound racing as I was reminded this week was once a huge sport which attracted millions of spectators in many venues across the country. It is now a dying minority sport with its major venues crumbling or closed down.

Crowds at the ones that are open are a handful if they are lucky. At some level Greyhound Racing allowed this to happen by bad decisions.

Racing should look long and hard because however massive the Cheltenham Festival is it will not sustain an eight month season if the rest of that season is small fields and the big Trainers only run their good horses in Cheltenham Trials.

One course that does push itself as a top track and attracts good crowds is Haydock and that’s where we go for our bet today. Haydock has superb facilities and stages high quality cards under both codes. I recommend a trip there anytime and there will be a strong knowledgeable crowd of jumping enthusiasts there today. There’s the Peter Marsh a top staying chase as the centrepiece of the card but we are playing a horse who I feel is the best horse on the whole card, a horse who could go on to be a genuine equine superstar. I speak of Politologue who runs at 1.30 for Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls. He was a brilliant hurdler but he could be a top notch chaser and he has his toughest test to date today. The opposition is strong but Politologue is well up to the task and has already produced a stunning performance at this track which was his first run over jumps.

5/4 is not usually a column tip type of price but I think it’s going to look massive and if you haven’t seen this horse race yet then make sure you watch because he is a very exciting jumper.

So lets hope we are cheering on a future superstar today, if you’re not already in my Racing Club then join up now I have some big bets planned for today and tomorrow.

Good luck and I will be back next week.
