Simon Holden Racing Club

It’s Leger Day one of the great days and one of the great races and there will be a huge crowd on the town Moor this afternoon including yours truly.

It’s a huge Grandstand second only to the new one at Ascot on a British Racecourse and though there will be a vast crowd you can always move around here. The other great thing is the position of the parade ring in front of the aforementioned huge stand so everybody can see the horses. At many courses particularly the bigger ones the horses are nowhere near the bulk of the crowd, if we are to attract lifelong fans to our wonderful sport then we need to get people engaging with the real stars of the show, the horses.

So the big race itself and it’s a mighty renewal with the winner of the Irish Derby Capri taking on the winner of the Goodwood Cup Stradivarius amongst others. The other fave is Crystal Ocean trained by Sir Michael Stoute..Capri is from Coolmore and Stradivarius (please do not say he has been fiddled with) is trained by Gosden now those three have farmed this race and the winner is likely to come from them.

I have been taken with how negative John Gosden has been about Stradivarius and that puts me right off him. He beat big orange to win the Goodwood Cup and that is some scalp BUT…

Big Orange had had some very hard races and Stradivarius got him late on well that was two miles this is one mile six and though it’s a long race you need pace.

Crystal Ocean certainly has pace my problem with the Gordon Stakes winner at Goodwood is that he is far from certain to get the trip. Ryan Moore was hardly brimming with confidence when asked if he would stay and if he does I’m not sure he is classy enough to win a classic. The fact he is trained by Sir Michael Stoute has meant people have gone overboard.

Which leaves Capri who is a maximum bet for me at 4/1. He battled to success in Ireland in the Irish Derby beating Cracksman and the English Derby winner Wings of Eagles back in third. Wings of Eagles was retired after but Cracksman has given the form a turbo boost by two impressive wins since.

Aiden has trained the horse since for this day and I have now worries he will stay the extra two furlongs in fact they will bring about improvement. It has to be Capri for me to land this in style.

We nearly landed one of the great touches on Wednesday when our each way gamble Razzmatazz just failed by a nostril to win the Scarborough Stakes @ 50/1. Still big profits on the week and if you are quick and join my racing Club then you can have 5 yes 5 big gambles today from the Town Moor.

Have a great Leger day whatever you are doing.
