Exeter Could Cause The Big Cup Upset Today
The history books will say that Manchester United and Liverpool progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup but both sides required late goals to win their third round ties. There were some scares along the way but the big favourites in both ties won their matches so Derby and Everton do not live to fight another day. In the Premier League era the cream usually rises to the top and one of the Big Four of English football have won the trophy in eight of the last nine years. UNITED are now the favourites at 7/2 with William Hill to win the FA Cup this season. Liverpool can be backed at 9/1.
Portsmouth (2007-08) and Wigan (20120-13) were exceptions but generally a team with aspirations to qualify for the Champions League run around Wembley (or the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff) with the trophy each May. Since the top tier in English football was rebranded for the 1992-93 season only two teams from outside the Premier League have played in the final but Millwall and Cardiff City lost those matches without scoring a goal. The average finishing position of the Cup winners is fourth in the league and its odds-on that figure will be maintained this season. If there is a huge upset today it could be EXETER beating West Brom at home and that outcome is 6/1 with Betfair.
There are Grade 1 races at Sandown and Chepstow today and the Welsh National at the latter track, weather permitting. The going at both turf tracks will be heavy but as usual it’s standard on the All Weather at Kempton and Lingfield. The 3pm race at Sandown is the final of the 2017 Veteran’s Chase Series and all the runners are aged 11 and older. HOUBLON DES OBEAUX is a mud lover who will have conditions to suit and the old boy can win this race at 11/1 with William Hill.
