It’s like the holy grail….. that elusive jackpot win.
Bookies love them, punters love them, marketing departments love them!
The accumulator is what we’re talking about today and why everyone loves them. But should we be playing them when they are loved by the bookmakers?
I remember, whilst working at Hills having to clear a £55,000 bet for an unknown customer. Before a bookmaker pays out on any bet over £3,000 it is investigated by the security department. They want to know if that person has gained an edge or if the bet was just lucky. This 55 grand whopper was won from a £1 bet. A nice win!
It was an elderly lady, who on her husband passing away, had come into the betting shop to see if any of his betting slips had returns on them. Whilst in the shop, she decided to have a flutter herself. She picked out 5 horses that were named after members of her family. They all went on to win at decent prices and she hit the jackpot.
Now let’s look at the reality of that.
That day Hill’s had taken well over 250 grand on accumulator bets. The only sizable bet to be paid out was the 55 grand. Bookies love accumulators because they rarely have to pay out on them. The probability of anyone winning a 5 fold or 10 fold is ridiculously small. Why do you think they offer a 10% bonus on a Lucky 15 bet? It’s because they hardly ever have to pay out that 10%!
However, despite all that it can be great fun to have these multiple bets and also profitable if you know what you’re doing. Only to small stakes, though. As you know, personally I only back singles but every now and then I’ll chuck a few quid at a multiple bet and have some fun!
Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever had a big win from an accumulator or do you just think it’s a waste of time?
