I spoke last week about the long game and treating betting as a business, a cheat that had tried to get one over my Granddad and having losing streaks. As we head into this time of year and the ground can be unpredictable, the form a little ropey and results even more ropey we need to think about losing streaks and how they can effect our mood and general outlook on our betting.
I remember a few years back at this time of year (I have it all documented in a diary!) things had gone really well from all my flat business and I was feeling optimistic about heading into the jumps season. As I hit the end of October things had started to go tits up big style. All the information I was getting wasn’t as strong as it had been the previous year and all my own analysis was finding a shed full of second places. What was I doing wrong? I needed to sit down and go through everything thoroughly. I knew my bank was safe as I was using my usual percentage and that it would cover large losing streaks but it was steadily decreasing.
After hours of analysis I realised there was one important thing that was creating my “near misses.” The weather! I had to become a meteorologist. I started looking into the weather every morning. Remember back then the internet wasn’t what it was now and I had to phone various friends and contacts every morning and ask them what it looked like outside their windows. They thought I’d gone mad! You see what was happening was that the information I was getting and my own analysis was dependent on the ground being what it was the night before or the morning of the race. The weather was so unstable that year that it was soft in the morning and going off heavy by the time my horse was running. I had to find a way of predicted what the going would be by the time my race was going off!
Of course now it is so much easier and one of the main questions I ask contacts now is “What ground has it been working on?” I then bring up various weather sites and make a prediction as to whether the ground will likely change in my favour or against me. I’ve become quite the expert in forecasting the weather now! Once I’d sussed it my betting improved and I realised that I’d learnt one of the many skills that it takes to make it in this game. My Granddad would be proud!
I still use the weather everyday in my betting and have many excellent contacts within the industry, despite a difficult October we’re slowly crawling back into profit and I make it my mission to show a profit for the month. A nice little winning streak is on it’s way as it always is and MATR will undoubtedly make October it’s 16th month in a row of showing a profit. Why not hop on board now and take advantage of my inside knowledge and weather predicting skills!!
I’ll be back next week with more stories and insights.
