This is my 1st full week with BETFAN and lets hope we can bang in some winners at Glorious Goodwood but hey, winners at Yarmouth or Brighton buys just as many groceries or settle the same bills. As long as the profits keep building who cares.
Sunday 28th. I was on a downer after my dismal showing on my 1st Saturday with BETFAN (as you are all well aware) so I was wary about throwing to many points around with gay abandon. From 8am the mobile started ringing and bleeping (immediately I was thinking this is the local lads after having a count up and grumpy with their hangovers and thinking Grrr “ANDY BELL”) but it was a constant flow of information which continued until around 11am.
I finally narrowed it down to 3 and breaking all my own rules backed and put up a horse which had not won for 2 years which was even money, BEACON LODGE which drifted like a barge and ran like a drain 4th Mmmmm the worst possible start. Then the Andrew Balding trained PURCELL at 11/2 e/w, which coming into the final furlong I thought I had cracked it only for him to veer to the stands rail and blow his chance of winning but did at least place for us so a small return. Then finally COLONEL MAK 4-40 at Ponty. I advised e/w at 5-1 backed into 100/30. Paul Hanagan hit the gates and never saw a horse and won by 4 lengths pulling up, the feeling of pure relief was incredible I’ve backed 1000’s of winners but this 1 was sweet, a good profit on the day, reputation returning and a good nights sleep beckoned.
Monday 29th. Was looking forward to a decent bet at Ayr on the back of a GOOD WINNING Sunday, but was dismayed that it had poured with rain all night and the going had changed heavy/soft in places. I called the owners of THE DUKKERER and they were unsure, so for me/us NO BET. My Irish connections were absolutely adamant that we needed to back DIPLOMAT in the 5-10 at Galway, the old tried and tested Mullins/Ruby combination and after going through the form I was sold on it as well, I thought we must have a swing at this 4pts win, bolts in 1st hoh hoh, day 2 is a BIG PROFIT.
Tuesday 30th. My first full week and 2 cracking days with great winners and profits (4 tips 3 winning bets). The start of Glorious Goodwood and if it doesn’t look difficult enough the rain adds another unknown. I am going to Yarmouth today 1st time I have missed Glorious Goodwood for 6 years, I am already missing it. But I have Yarmouth and a night out to look forward to. We have 3 bets today 1 Yarmouth, 1 Galway and 1 Goodwood. My Yarmouth bet was in the 3-15 SIGNO SASSI and we knew our fate early, he was a real pig before the race unseating going to the start, refusing to enter the stalls and fluffing the start by 5 lengths, I am going to give him 1 more chance as he has loads of ability. LADY GILBRALTAR was a Non Runner at Goodwood and our best bet SHAMAR ridden by Ruby, who I think was over confident, fluffed the last hurdle and just failed to recover getting beaten by a neck, the most annoying part was SHAMAR beat the winner comfortably by over 3 lengths last time. First losing day this week.
But an exciting night out in Great Yarmouth can compensate. We start off in the Prom and things are already looking up on last week as we have a hen party circulating and even better none of my hard earned has got them to this 3 parts to the wind stage. The bride, I assume due to the L plate tapped to the arras (L plate who’s she kidding heheh) is a leary 1 “good luck whoever” is now downing her 3rd slammer with the wilder part of her flock, while the more reserved 1s giggle and its only been 10 minutes, wish I could regain my losses on betting it’s all gonna end in tears, we will see. Just as we start chatting to the more reserved part of the flock and the wine has hardly chilled can u believe it? a mini bus driver descents upon the slammer drinking “I will” and the “good girls” are gone in a flash and after a flurry of flames, salt and lemon all seems last weekish again.
Wednesday 31st. Last nights pub crawl didn’t really liven up, apart from meeting up with the hen party in the pier bar later, it was far too late into proceeding’s to even contemplate a chat (even through Ken tried but he had no feeling below the watch chain) and the more likely girls had already had if off on their toes to their loved 1s. A Kebab on the way back to our hotel and that’s another day complete.
7am and I am still smarting over Ruby’s over confident ride yesterday, just a push before the last when he was tanking along and a losing day would of been a good winning one.
2 bets at the drying Sussex downs track today, 1 that has been catching the proverbial pigeons on the Newmarket gallops and 1 from the all conquering Hannon team.
Our 1st bet 2-30g EXCESS KNOWLEDGE, I have had to rewrite this 3 times and tone it down every time, how can a professional jockey be so tactically inept letting a 33/1 shot block him in and drop the reins twice on a horse that stays, why not use its stamina in a slowly ran race (is William Buick really up to a TOP job, or is he just a good jockey, on certain tracks) I could go on forever, but hey we’ve all seen and witnessed it but now the hard bit, explain to “her in doors” that the same happened today as yesterday, a professional well paid sportsman “cocked up.” Note to myself: Now take a brisk walk in the cooling rain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a difference a MASTER CLASS ride from Richard Hughes on TORONADO, a real professional and he’s riding ours in the last.
2nd bet: what a pure genius Richard Hughes is stall 18 on MAGIC CITY hope you all snapped up the 13/2 as advised ew this morning. A good winning day 3 outta 4. My 1st full week with BETFAN, which could of been soooooooo much better, had a nose and a neck gone our way, no explaining to her in doors now, fickle things us gamblers all of a sudden every things rosy, sky’s are blue and grass is green.
Thursday 1st. Another brilliant winning day for us yesterday, but I have still woken up thinking if only (EXCESS KNOWLEDGE & SHARMAR). Time to move on another month another day. Fantastic days racing and we need to focus and kick on today. I have been to Newmarket gallops this morning and hopefully seen and picked up some important information for the coming weeks. I certainly saw 1 gallop this morning which is due to run next week and we WILL be backing it.
3 bets today all at Goodwood. 2-45g FIGURE OF SPEECH, was still a bit green and was hampered coming out of the stalls, which didn’t help and when he was making his run got squeezed up, but I don’t think he would of won, note book: needs further already. The 2m Goodwood Cup, we decided to give Mr Pedroza another chance ew after his shockingly bad ride at Ascot on ALTANO and he defiantly had it more prominent and got us a place at 8/1. Finally I pinned my colours to PYTHAGOREAN 4-50g and not wishing to sound like a broken record, I still can’t believe we got beat into 2ND AGAIN, only this time I was sure and so was betfair in the photo betting we had won and not even a dead heat, absolutely gutted and gobsmacked. 3 days 3 VERY, VERY close 2nds. Got to bite the bullet, I know what I’m doing WILL pay off, things are just not dropping for us at the moment and we are still wining, I am confident the information and form reading are good, whoa behold the bookies when we get a little luck. Certainly no joviality’s tonight points to prove and form to read.
Friday 2nd. We have been bang outta luck this week and we need it for days like today, because don’t kid yourselves we will get them and again. Wasn’t my finest hour today Richard Johnson was cruising to victory on DUMBARTON only to demolish the hurdle 3 out and then get the last wrong as well. Not really sure what went wrong with GRECIAN was smashed up in the betting from 8s into 4s fave, but Jim Crowley didn’t look all out in the final 2 furlongs and the 2nd time blinkers didn’t have the desired effect on DANCE AND DANCE. Another day tomorrow and hopefully Mr Spencer is going to help recoup yesterdays loses if what he says is correct about the 2yo he rides. No selling WEESHES at Newmarket tonight as a long journey to Goodwood tomorrow.
Saturday 3rd. Goodwood is a fantastic spectacle but I’m not sure how punter friendly it is. A great deal of horses do not act on this very specialist track as we know to our detriment and personally I am pleased it’s over and we can concentrate on making some real money. My 1st full week with BETFAN has had its ups and downs with far to many hard luck story’s and 2nds, but I am confident in the long run we will languish in huge profits as the information we acquire is top notch.
Sunday 4th. I am going “all in” today, can you believe it at another specialist track, Chester. My friend has travelled up with TOBOOUG HAPPY and it’s fully expected to win. This James Tate filly absolutely hosed up at Brighton last time and AFTER she wins today she goes straight to York for the yearling stakes. Think I shall go bell ringing or twitching this morning as a form of relaxation, what do you think??????.
Another week passes in Andy Bells turbulent life, until next Sunday be safe.
