The Gambling Don

January 19, 2014 By admin Leave a Comment

Hope you are all well, well I expect you are better than BetFan’s resident aren’t I clever merchant Simon Holden who spent the best part of an hour telling me about his unbeaten Battle of The Tipsters record at Wincanton the other day.

Watching the paint dry on the members bar wall would have been more interesting. This is a man who claims the Don was slow to buy him a drink in his column yet said he had to ring a bet in when it was his shout and then promptly stood on the balcony for what appeared to be an eternity with his phone nowhere near his ear!

I see Owen Churchill dispensed with him yesterday with a minimum of fuss, he wasn’t answering when I rang to commiserate last night, maybe he was at the bar. Whilst not wanting to use my column to take cheap shots at others I must say that shameless self promoter Andy Bell was rather sexist in yesterday’s column wasn’t he. I nearly showed my wife Penny the offending article but time was drawing on and she hadn’t finished the Don’s breakfast at the time (joke joke).

Ascot was a rather soulless place yesterday and the Don felt terrible as he watched the big race near the connections of Somersby who were all there to celebrate the life of Terry Biddlecombe and praying the horse would win for a fairytale victory. It unseated early on in the race and you could see the upset on their faces, horrible but I suspect the old rascal would have told them a few expletives and headed to the bar. We really won’t see his like again sadly!

The race was won by Sire de grugy and how great to see Ryan Moore there, he was so thrilled he threatened to not scowl at one point. The horse is definitely better right handed but now they are holding him up he is looking an absolute machine. Whisper it but on a right handed track he would give a fit and well Sprinter Sacre plenty to think about.

I’m thrilled for Gary and the whole Moore family, the Don has known them a long time and nobody works harder and nobody deserves a top top horse more than this firm. That’s three grade ones on the bounce and the way he made a good field look like they were stood still he won’t be losing anytime soon.

Elsewhere Melodic Rendezvous put himself in the Champion Hurdle reckoning with a win in the big race at Haydock. I watched it on the screen with some associates of Nicholls and they were gobsmacked their horse Pitt Zigg got beat so this is good form. This horse will go there with a real shout if it comes up soft on Champion Hurdle day.

Right enough about yesterday lets have a winner today you say. Well I’m off to Towcester where I just love course form and our bet runs in the 3.10. It’s the Kim Bailey trained Knockandrawley who my mole at the yard says is flying at home. This horse is proven to love this very demanding uphill finish and they think will take the world of beating. Back him to win at 3/1 with Paddy Power.

Have a great Sunday and as always in a confusing World Trust in the Don!

Back next Sunday.
