I arrived back in Newmarket at 7pm last night from Newbury and went to sit in the study where I remained.
No I wasn’t depressed at the thought of reading Andy Bell’s diary though God knows it’s an ordeal in itself, more of him later.
Yesterday was incredibly frustrating for me and no doubt for my members all though I’m lucky they trust me by now and know we make great profits but there are days that kick you in the proverbials!
I have thought for some time that Dodging Bullets is the next superstar in the making for the Nicholl’s production line and I still believe that now though he got beat. I made him a rare max bet and took my position by the rails. Now lets be clear the ground was heavy and most judges will tell you that on this type of ground you go on and get a lead when your horse is going well because all horses tire. No one it seems has told Daryl Jacob this theory as he sat and sat and sat when going well. I understand the horse went 20/1 on in running but when push came to shove Jacob had no lead because he had sat level instead of going on then was incredibly weak in the finish and Paddy Brennan got Module home. I have reviewed the race on video and it really is no wonder some of Nicholls top owners are voting with their feet and demanding other jockeys. I’m sorry but rides like this just are not good enough for one of the top jobs in racing and this might be one high profile cock up too many.
We had two other major bets that finished second as well, sometimes that’s just the way it goes we should have been celebrating and we will be again soon I can assure you, it’s still going to be a great time with Cheltenham on the horizon.
Speaking of Cheltenham I will be going head to head with Andy Bell, every race over four days.
He was stood with a bunch of cronies yesterday and attempted to bait the Don with some interesting views and phrases some questioning the Dons parentage. Well in the cold light of day I’m going to issue him a little challenge which will test his cockiness. I offer him a side bet over four days of the Festival betting one selection in every race. Five Grand to be held by BetFan and paid to the winner. I suspect the colour will be draining from his face as he reads this and for once I look forward to reading his diary for his acceptance which surely will come won’t it????
Today Leopardstown stage a fantastic Jumps card with lots of Cheltenham pointers and the highlight being the Hennessey Gold Cup where Tidal Bay is reunited with Ruby Walsh. There are also excellent trials over hurdles and fences. Our Sunday Special goes in the last race and is a horse I’ve been waiting for after a recent trip to Ireland where several faces were desperate to tell me about one unraced horse.
The race is the 4.50 bumper and we need to be on the unraced Lockstockandbarrel who is 11/8 with Bet365. He has been working very well and is beautifully bred. There will be some very long faces if he gets turned over and the skys the limit for this horse.
Lets hope he ends our weekend on a high, have a great day and as always for the man who is top of Betfan’s all time top points scorer table, Trust in the Don.
Back next Sunday.
