AP Mccoy has had a great week and so has the Don and his followers with the service landing a spectacular three out of three on Thursday at Carlisle.
Members were told plain and simple at 8.30 am that Jonjo and AP were going all out with JP Mcmanus’s help to get the great man to 4,000 winners and that this was a day they felt would hurtle him forwards. It was a masterclass in race riding on a testing stiff track as throughout the day we saw him lay off a too strong pace and then later kick on when others were dawdling.
When he gets to the landmark which won’t be long at this rate the media will no doubt talk of retirement as AP approaches veteran stage for jump jocks but my contacts at the yard who are already proving lucrative tell me both AP and Jonjo are reinvigorated with the better quality horses JP has sent them this year and I don’t see AP packing in anytime soon which is great for the game because like Dettori on the flat AP transcends the game and we need him.
I arrived on Merseyside last night ready for the two day meeting at Aintree which is always informative. The quality seems to increase each year here and though Aintree can seem a little soulless when only a third full you can move around easily and see the horses and of course unlike the National meeting you aren’t stepping over the fallers (humans I mean they start drinking early here).
Racings obsession with Saturdays means the key race the Old Roan Chase has been switched to the Saturday instead of its original Sunday berth. I think they think we are all at Church on Sundays (anything to escape Andy Bells Diary the best excuse for a lie in if theres ever been it certainly makes me feel sleepy) because the BHA will not allow any key races on the Sabbath anymore. There’s still a decent card tomorrow if your in the area, it’s a great spectacle to just see the National fences even if they are not racing over them.
What of the Old Roan Chase itself its been won by some serious horses and is renamed in Monet’s Garden who was brilliant round here even giving Kauto Star a beating. Monet’s at his best would have been odds on to beat the horses who line up today. Thats a tribute to him not a go at him because it’s a cracker of a race today. Walkon is the fave and on form that’s fair enough but he is a horse who struggles to get his head in front and he may find one or two too good here. Wishful Thinking was second here last year and the Hobbs horse will be on the premises but he is a tricky customer and needs everything to drop right. Mr Moonshine will ensure this is a real test by blasting off but he should be outclassed even off a low weight. Conquisto with AP up will be popular but I’m going for the Twiston Davies horse here Astrocad who is a real track specialist. He ran well at Cheltenham recently and that will have put him spot on for this. Back him each way at 7/1 with Totesport because he gets nearly a stone and a half from Wishful Thinking here and that can be the difference. He can add to the yards strong record at this meeting.
Get with me for the jumps I’m already showing I’m the service you need, Thursday was just the start for us as we push on, have a great weekend and as always Trust in the Don
Back next Saturday.
