The European Tour arrives in Portugal this week for a standard Tournament as opposed to the pro celebrity high jinks of last week in Scotland. It also marks the first return to competition since the Ryder Cup of Jose Maria Olazabal and there will no doubt be more popular a player all week. In fact it will be very difficult to concentrate for the other two players in his group such will be the reception on every tee and every green.
Olazabal’s days of winning Tournaments are long gone I’m afraid but it would be great to see him make the cut. Young Tom Lewis will be looking to defend the title he won so brilliantly last year but he hasn’t gone on as expected and it doesn’t seem likely. A strong field is here with another Ryder Cup hero Francesco Molinari starting as favourite, again his form has dipped and you could actually argue that this is the most wide open Tournament of the year so far. This is quite a tight old fashioned course which will place a premium on accuracy as opposed to smashing it off the tee. You will need to putt well on these undulating greens if you are going to claim the title this Sunday afternoon.
In America it’s the Frys.com Open in California at the stunning Cordevalle Golf Club. This is a stunning golf course but for the very top pros it’s a fairly easy one and I expect the winner to be well under par. Here we are looking for long hitters and aggressive putters who try and make birdies. The guys who play safe and just coast it up to the hole aren’t going to win this week so we are looking for the more gung ho types. I use my unique ratings to identify the right players for the right courses and this week has thrown up some big priced selections.
This is traditionally a strong time of year for golf betting as the trends for the season are firmly established so jump on board!
I look forward to seeing you on the fairways!
Back next Tuesday.
