This week rolls into New Orleans for the Zurich Classic played on, in my view, one of the finest courses in the World of Golf, TPC Louisiana. This Pete Dye classic design is just the right combination of distance and skill so that every player has a chance to win.
The greens are very tricky but low scores are out there and last year Ernie Els and that crazy character Jason Dufner fought out a memorable battle with laugh a minute Dufner winning in a play off. Non golf fans shame on you as you may not spot the clever irony here as Dufner must be the most miserable man in all of golf. Last year the USA Ryder Cup team held a challenge where they offered a reward for anyone who could produce a picture of him smiling. That money remains in a vault somewhere but one thing is for sure, this course sits up perfectly for Dufner and he will stage a strong defence that’s for certain. Els on the other hand is in freefall again and you only hope his well publicised battles with the Booze are not plaguing the great man again.
Ironically again I drank a bottle of Ernie Els signature red last week whilst watching the final round of the Masters, at £40 a bottle it certainly is a treat wine but it’s easy to see if you owned the company why you might be tempted to enjoy it too much. Anyway Els is too good a player to be in the doldrums for long but I fear he won’t challenge this week. I received an email about the poor form of Bubba Watson another player who has done well here and I think the answer lies in the fact he seems to have been distracted by winning the Masters and has enjoyed the trappings without concentrating on his golf. It would be a shame if he was a one hit wonder as he is a unique talent but until he rededicates I would be wary of backing him.
This course really is a visual feast and like all great courses it finishes with a great hole which adds to the drama, here it’s a par 5 where if you go for it an eagle is a real possibility but trouble lurks and last year that led to plenty of sixes and sevens.
