Golf that most selfish of sports where one man takes on the field becomes a team game this week on both sides of the Atlantic as we have if we are being harsh (and we feel like it don’t well lets be honest with each other) two poor man’s Ryder Cups.
I write of on this side of the Atlantic The Seve Trophy between Britain and Ireland v Continental Europe which is now in its 13th year and is staged in the beautiful surroundings of Saint nom La Breteche 13 miles from Paris. I have played this course and it is stunning, (to be honest I’m surprised I wasn’t called up to play this week must be because I’ve changed my mobile number) with many holes perfect for Matchplay conditions. To give things an extra twist the teams this time are captained by two Legends of the Ryder Cup Olazabal and Torrance.
Torrance leads GB and Ireland to what he hopes will be a third straight win but Olly will be confident not only because he is a brilliant Captain but also because the teams look closer in terms of quality this time around. It should be great fun viewing and with these two around one thing is certain there will be tears. Both are known to break down that often in interviews I’m surprised the whole thing isn’t being sponsored by Green Flag. Hopefully they could guarantee to stop them crying within the hour!
Over the Pond we have the entertaining but slightly bizarre concept of the President’s Cup which is played on Non Ryder Cup years and features a Team from the US against anyone in the World as long as you are not from Britain or Europe or Ireland. Now that’s not anyone you have to be good at Golf and there are only allowed to be 12 of you but essentially that is the deal. We have Canadians, Aussies, South Americans and Asians uniting with one purpose to beat the Americans (no surprise who most of the neutrals want to win!)
The Yanks are lead by the winning captain last time the coolest man in Sport the great Freddie Couples who commands great respect even from Mickelson and Woods who have in the past been known to be trouble at these events. Woods will put a shift in this week which is something most Ryder Cup Captains have failed to get from him. But Freddie C has a worthy adversary in the great Nick Price who behind the smile was described by Nick Faldo as the toughest competitor he ever faced. Price is fully aware that the Us Media and golfing public have already awarded this Cup to the US team and seems keen to play along with the isn’t it great to be here making up the numbers routine while you all shout USA for 12 hours a day BUT I reckon he fancies he can cause an upset here.
The Cup will be played on the hallowed ground of Muirfield Village in Ohio and with an International team featuring the Likes of Adam Scott, Ernie Els and Angel Cabrera this could be much closer than the odds would have you think.
At Golf Bet Profits we are playing in the outrights but also will be updating every day with bets on each days matches, the President’s cup will be on here in the evening perfect for having a bet and watching the action. One minute you will be shouting for the Amercian team because we are on them in that match then quickly cheering their mistakes as we are against them in the next match, have you no shame!
This is a great week to start your golf betting adventure, so get involved or Olly and Sam Torrance will cry even more and no one wants to see that.
Back next Tuesday.
