I decided that I would put my weekly diary on hold this week! I could have been shouting another ante post winner from the rooftops or having another pop at the racing chaps, but no this newsletter will be used for something far more important.
Greyhound racing is under threat with Wimbledon the last stadium in London where the Derby is held, up for sale. The track is owned jointly by Galliard Homes & Risk Capital who were keen to demolish the site for housing. But the local Merton Council have designated it a sporting venue.
In essence they are keen for AFC Wimbledon to return with a stadium & housing plan. Though the team was never in existence until Plough Lane closed and Wimbledon FC moved to become Milton Keynes Dons. The local residents do not want football they are keen for greyhound racing to remain.
Paschal Taggart an Irish businessman is keen to upgrade the venue into a top quality greyhound track both are hoping to secure permission to regenerate the site.
A public hearing into the future of the Wimbledon greyhound stadium was held recently as the two sides went head-to-head to fight for the venue.
An independent inspector appointed by the government considered all sides of the debate that lasted for two days. After the meeting Paschal Taggart appeared on RPGTV and by all accounts it hadn’t gone well for the greyhounds to remain at Plough Lane.
So London Mayor Boris Johnston who seems to be excited by the idea of a world class greyhound stadium in London. He is to be visited at his London City Hall offices by all greyhound fans in a ‘Show of Support’ for Greyhound racing to remain in London.
This is taking place on Monday 17th February at 2pm. People are travelling over from Ireland and even further afield to show their support. Come and join us!
If you care at all about greyhound racing I implore you to attend and support our show of passion – show the Mayor how much we care, how much we want greyhound racing to remain in the capital.
If Wimbledon closes it could be the beginning of the end for greyhound racing!
Free Tip time again and I can see no reason why Hometown Day can’t win again. He showed a blistering turn of early pace to see off a better field than he faces tonight. However he’s not 8/1 but still represents value in my book at 9/4. If he comes away in similar fashion we should all collect.
