Richard Hughes rode into the record books on Monday with a 10,168/1 seven timer at Windsor on Monday. The 39 year old who is on the verge of his first championship won on all but one of his mounts to become the the second jockey to ride seven winners at a meeting following Frankie Dettoris magnificent seven at Ascot in 1996.
The congratulations were well deserved for the most dedicated of jockeys who stands 5ft 10in tall and can weigh in at 8st 7lbs. The last of his winners was made possible by his mate Ryan Moore standing down to let Hughes ride Mama Quilla to victory in the last race of the day.
Bookmakers bemoaned the result but was nowhere near as damaging as Dettori’s achievement which cost the industry £40 million. However David Williams of Ladbrokes said one client had won over £250.000 for a £256 Hughes related bet.
The record for a meeting is held by U.S. jockey Eddie Castro, who rode nine winners from eleven mounts at Calder in 2005.
Today’s racing has lots of variety with jumping, turf and allweather cards to tempt you. Nottingham is interesting where Frankel’s half brother Morpheus makes his debut for Sir Henry Cecil but for Howies Hottie I’m going to stick with the allweather card at Lingfield in the 3.00.
We have been having a great time with the Hotties the last couple of weeks with both So Beloved and Almuftarris winning at nice juicy prices. By the way I have been in contact with Roger Charlton trainer of So Beloved and his views on the colt are very interesting but that’s for another day.
Back to the 3.00 Lingfield which is a claimer over 7 furlongs and the selection is Aciano from the Brendan Powell yard. He will be ridden by the excellent Joe Fanning who rides this track very well and in particular with horses like Aciano who race prominently. The danger might be the Luke Morris ridden One Way or Another who could be used for forecast purposes. It would be nice to see Joe and Luke fight out the finish as these were the two jocks who fought out the finish in the Winter allweather championship last season.
EYECATCHERS
Fishingforcompliments trainer R.Fahey – Ran well in a claimer at Wolverhampton from a very wide draw and in the correct grade he should go close.
Mac Gille Eoin trainer L.Dace – Ran on strongly from the back last time and I’m sure this old sprinter has plenty of ability to get on the score board.
Serius Prospect trainer D.Ivory – I’m sure plenty of you would have noticed this on Channel 4 last Saturday. He fluffed the start by about 8 lengths but made up lots of late ground to make the frame and could finish the season in style.
Lemon Drop Red trainer P.Webber – Looked a possible winner at chepstow until getting tired in the very soft ground. He is bound to improve for the outing and should soon be winning a handicap hurdle.
Back next Wednesday be lucky.
Howard Davis.
