Well it looked dodgy early in the week but here we are with day 1 of the Newbury Winter festival and not only is it on but the ground is going to be just soft, perfect Winter jumping ground.
Hats off to the clerk of the course for getting this meeting on a superb effort from everyone and unlike other courses Newbury actually tell you honestly what the likelihood is of racing being on. I know bizarre isn’t it Racecourses considering the public can’t see it catching on.
The Festival really has become an excellent fixture building of course to the Hennessy Gold Cup on Saturday which is already shaping up into quite an ante post market, watch for our old friends the Bookmakers who have a terrible habit of shortening up all the horses in the 48 hours up to the race then pushing them out again on the morning of the race so you might take 3/1 on Thursday then watch the same horse go off at 4/1 on the day which can make you feel a little bit irritated. I would hang on now or look for the bookies who go non runner no bet which is always nice to have in your back pocket.
Nicky Henderson seems to be swinging behind running the favourite Bobs Worth as the ground is not as bad as he feared but he is a horse I think needs good ground to show his best form and very few can win a race this tough on ground that doesn’t suit, he is no Denman!
Before that we have two more days of thrilling jumping action and Newbury will feature prominently in Power Naps so join us as we aim for plenty of profit at this exciting Winter festival! Have a great few days Racing everyone.
Back next Thursday.
