It was announced yesterday that Frankie Dettori will face a six month ban from racing for testing positive for a banned substance.
Of course there has to be screening for the safety of other jockeys, horses and everyone else on the day from staff to spectators but I for one feel a little sorry for the great man.
He has had a very difficult year and like many jocks is in a constant war with his body to fight the cravings to eat. Liken it to boxers before a fight they get down to a low weight then splurge after and can easily put two or three stone on. The jockeys never get that chance to do that with them it’s a constant war at three to four stone below what there body weight should be naturally. Frankie has been doing this for over twenty years so hopefully he can take this time out to relax and come back stronger because we need him and he still has so much to offer the sport.
Racing has been decimated by the weather this week and all we can do is hope that the massive meetings at Sandown and Aintree beat the big freeze for their big weekend cards.
One thing that frustrates me more than anything is the current fashion for endless inspections by courses who seem incapable of making a decision. It’s frozen at nine so we will look again at 10.30 etc. With many meetings starting at 12 at this time of year it’s difficult for all concerned to know whether to set off to the races or have a bet with any confidence. A decision should be taken by 9am one way or the other.
Fingers crossed both Aintree and Sandown make it and that we are told one way or another in good time!
Back next Thursday.
